“What’s the healthiest breakfast?” is a question that keeps popping up in our health-conscious world. While protein-packed savory breakfasts have been trending lately, there’s a surprising new favorite: miso soup.

The trend began with a TikTok video where creator Niko Katsuyoshi called it a “hack” for better health. “Miso soup is great because it’s fermented and good for your gut,” he explains. “For extra protein, try using bone broth instead of water.”

Made from fermented soybeans, salt, and a fungus also used in brewing alcohol, miso isn’t just good for digestion. Research shows it may help lower the risk of cancer and heart disease, and even protect against radiation. It’s no wonder it’s a staple in the diets of Okinawans, who live in one of the world’s Blue Zones known for longevity.

Nutritionist Dr. Olivier Courtin-Clarins calls miso “a powerhouse of minerals and vitamins,” adding that it’s affordable, tasty, and pairs well with vegetables to boost any meal.

A Japanese study found that miso’s natural probiotics may reduce stomach cancer and heart disease rates while also offering anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Katsuyoshi enjoys miso soup daily, especially in the morning—a habit supported by longevity expert Dr. Vicente Mera of SHA Wellness Clinic. “Miso directly impacts aging, particularly benefiting skin and brain function,” Dr. Mera notes.

Katsuyoshi’s advice? “Wait a bit before breakfast since miso is high in sodium.” He even heard a suggestion to add miso to a water bottle for sipping throughout the day. However you try it, just make sure it fits into a balanced diet.
