Water may seem like the obvious choice for hydration, but is it really the best? A recent study found that milk actually hydrates better than water in some cases.

Milk vs. Water for Hydration
Researchers compared how well different beverages kept people hydrated by measuring fluid retention after drinking. Surprisingly, both whole and skim milk outperformed water in certain conditions.

Why is milk more hydrating?
Milk contains natural sugars, proteins, and fats that slow digestion, helping the body retain fluids longer. Here’s why it works so well:

Electrolytes: Milk has sodium and potassium, which help the body hold onto fluids.
Protein & carbs: These slow stomach emptying, keeping water in the body longer.
Balanced osmolarity: This helps cells absorb water more effectively.

Should you drink milk instead of water?
Not necessarily—water is still the best choice for everyday hydration. But milk can be more effective in certain situations, like:

– After intense exercise (to replace fluids and nutrients).
– For kids and older adults (who may need extra hydration).
– During mild dehydration (when fluid retention is key).

If you’re lactose intolerant or avoid dairy, water is still your best bet. Some plant-based milks (like soy or oat) can help, but they don’t hydrate as well as cow’s milk.
