After my trip to Puerto Vallarta this past June, I made a promise to myself: I will never again visit a rainy, humid place without a good shampoo for frizzy hair. The mountain views were beautiful, but my hair was not, and I spent my beach days dealing with a mess of frizz.
Jackie Seabrooke, a celebrity hairstylist based in New York City, told me that my hair problem was, unfortunately, not unusual. “When hair is dry and lacks moisture, it tries to absorb moisture from the air, which makes the cuticle swell and become frizzy,” she explained. “That’s why hair looks even frizzier in humid conditions.” But sometimes, bad frizz doesn’t even come with a fun vacation on the side.
Seabrooke said that everyday habits—like washing with water that’s too hot, heat damage, rough towel drying, and genetics—can all make hair more static than smooth. And while styling products can help, controlling frizz starts in the shower.

According to hairstylist and celebrity makeup artist Leticia Llesmin, a good anti-frizz shampoo can make hair feel “soft and light while keeping flyaways under control.” These formulas, Llesmin said, usually contain moisturizing ingredients like glycerin, panthenol, oils, or butters. Shampoos with proteins help strengthen weak spots in the hair, she says, and—since sulfates can dry out hair—sulfate-free formulas are important.

Everything You Need to Know
What’s the best shampoo for frizzy hair?
The 8 shampoos in this edit are the top picks for frizzy hair, according to experts who work with all hair textures and types.Although different shampoos use various ingredients to fight frizz—like the plant polymer in Aveda’s formula or the argan oil in MoroccanOil’s—they all work in a similar way. They seal the hair cuticles and restore moisture while cleansing, which helps keep hair soft, shiny, and easy to manage. The key is finding the right one for your hair, whether it’s dry, fine, color-treated, or has other specific needs.
How do I stop my hair from frizzing?
Unfortunately, there’s no one-size-fits-all fix for frizz. “The causes of frizz can vary,” Schlabach explains. “If frizz is a real issue, the first thing to consider is the health of your hair.” For example, he says, hair can become overly dry from bleaching, over-processing, chemical treatments, or heat damage. Also, some people wait too long between trims. “Any of these can lead to dryness and brittleness, which causes breakage—and that’s frizz,” he says. Once you figure out what’s causing the frizz, “the next step is to get good at styling your hair,” Schlabach continues. “Remember, the healthier your hair is, the easier it is to style, because there are fewer problems to hide or manage. The better you get at styling, the longer your style or definition will last.”
Llesmin adds a gentle reminder that controlling frizz doesn’t stop in the shower. “Condition after every wash, use a weekly mask, and avoid washing your hair every day to keep natural oils,” she advises. “Always finish with a cool rinse, dry gently with a microfiber towel or cotton, and protect your hair with leave-ins, oils, and sprays that shield against heat, UV, and humidity.”
What to Look for in a Shampoo for Frizzy Hair
Here’s what the experts suggest looking for in a shampoo for frizzy hair:
– Oils: “The best ingredients for taming frizz are oils,” says Giannetos. “Jojoba, argan, avocado, coconut, and shea butter are some of my favorites.”
– Glycerin: Washington recommends glycerin, which helps attract moisture to the hair.
– Keratin: “Keratin and amino acids can also strengthen hair and reduce frizz,” Washington says.
– Sulfate-free: As for what to avoid, Washington says: “Avoid sulfates, as they can strip moisture and make frizz worse.”
– Helpful Buzzwords: Seabrooke suggests looking for terms like hydrating, moisturizing, and smoothing on the label.
– Formula Type: “Knowing your hair type—whether it’s fine or thick—can help you choose the right intensity of moisturizing ingredients. For example, if you have fine, frizzy hair, avoid heavy, intensive formulas, as they can weigh hair down and make it look oily,” she adds.
What causes frizzy hair?
“Frizzy hair can come from many things, like your natural hair texture, lack of moisture, or friction from clothing—like hoodies—rubbing against your hair,” says Giannetos. “Most people notice frizz in the morning because of the tossing and turning during sleep.”
Joseph Maine, a celebrity hairstylist and cofounder of Trademark Beauty, adds that frizz can also result from heat styling or chemical damage. “Natural hair texture, especially in curly or wavy hair, can also contribute to frizz,” he says. “Using the right hair care products and avoiding over-washing can help manage frizz effectively.”
Can shampoo actually prevent hair frizz?
“Shampoo can help prevent frizz, especially if it’s specifically made for that purpose,” Seabrooke says, pointing to formulas with moisturizing and smoothing ingredients as particularly helpful. It’s also important to switch up your shampoo regularly.Frequent use of sulfates can dry out your hair, especially if you work out often and shower regularly. While the best anti-frizz shampoos can help keep your hair smooth, they work best when used alongside other products. “Shampoo alone can’t completely prevent frizz, but it can help manage it when paired with a conditioner and anti-frizz treatment,” says celebrity hairstylist Davontae’ Washington.
How do you stop hair from looking frizzy?
“To stop your hair from looking frizzy, try these tips: use moisturizing and smoothing shampoos and conditioners; avoid washing your hair with very hot water; and finish with a cool rinse to close the cuticles before getting out of the shower,” says Seabrooke. She also suggests avoiding rough towel drying—instead, use a microfiber or satin towel to soak up excess water before blow-drying or styling.
Always use a heat protectant before styling, and apply leave-in conditioning products like serums, oils, or creams to smooth and fight frizz. “Deep condition your hair once a week, get regular trims to keep split ends at bay, limit heat styling, and consider using a satin pillowcase,” Seabrooke adds. Giannetos agrees, recommending a silk pillowcase. “This will limit the amount of friction while you’re sleeping since your hair will glide much smoother on a silk pillowcase than on a regular one.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Here is a list of FAQs about the best shampoos for frizzy hair based on stylist and Vogue editor recommendations
General Beginner Questions

Frizz happens when the outer layer of your hair is raised or damaged This allows moisture from the air to get inside the hair shaft making it swell and look puffy Dry hair is especially prone to this because it is desperate for hydration
2 How is a shampoo for frizzy hair different from a regular shampoo
These shampoos are specifically formulated to be more moisturizing and smoothing They usually contain humectants and oils or silicones They are also typically sulfatefree meaning they dont strip away your hairs natural oils as aggressively as regular shampoos do
3 I have curly hair Will these shampoos work for me
Yes absolutely Frizz is the number one complaint for curly and wavy textures These shampoos are designed to define curls and reduce puffiness by keeping the hair hydrated However you might still need a heavy conditioner or leavein cream afterward as shampoo alone wont define your curls
4 Do I need to use a conditioner with these shampoos

5 Will these shampoos weigh down my fine frizzy hair
It depends on the specific formula Some are very rich and creamy while others are lightweight and airlike Look for words like lightweight volumizing or detoxifying on the bottle if you have fine hair and avoid heavy oils like coconut or shea butter
