I have an old black leather envelope from the early days of Cuyana that I use as a permanent home for my passport, eye mask, and a cheap pair of airplane headphones. That way, I never forget the essentials and can just toss them into my bag all at once. I’ve also been using this Hermes pouch all summer, and it’s been great for storing the rest of my travel bits, like an Avène face mist, a mini hairbrush, hand cream, and lip balm for in-flight freshening up. For long-haul flights without an upgrade, the Ostrich neck pillow is an absolute must!

This time of year, my plane bag is usually also my beach tote. I’m currently deciding between a jute one I bought last summer (which I love but sheds like crazy) and a cleaner canvas version. Inside the bag, I have tons of little pouches that hold boring essentials like Vaseline and eye drops to fight dry air. Speaking of which, I try to switch to glasses for red-eye flights, since my contacts always end up stuck to my eyes by the end of a 10-hour trip. Finally, despite my best efforts and plenty of melatonin, I can never sleep on the plane—so I need something to do. I’ve been working through Muriel Spark’s books. Loitering with Intent is an all-time favorite, and I just ordered The Driver’s Seat, a novella that’s perfect for a plane ride.
