This year marks H&M’s 20th anniversary of designer collaborations. It all started in 2004 with a groundbreaking partnership with Karl Lagerfeld. Since then, these collaborations have not only showcased H&M’s global reach and influence but have also helped launch the international careers of niche, buzzworthy designers like Rokh, Erdem, Toga, and Magda Butrym.
The latest designer to join this roster is Lorena Saravia, who founded her label in Mexico City in 2010. She quickly developed a signature style that blends artisanal craftsmanship with elegance—and includes standout cowboy boots. Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s creative director, explained, “Lately, we’ve been focusing on more independent designers from around the world. Great creativity can come from anywhere, and we want our collaborations to reflect the diversity of where we operate. We discovered Lorena and were immediately drawn to her work. Though we start with a local focus, the result is always a global partnership.”
For Saravia, the opportunity is both an honor and a chance to put Mexican fashion on the map. “Mexico is having a beautiful moment right now,” she said. The collaboration also offered her a chance to grow professionally by learning new techniques and working methods. “I’ve been a fan of H&M’s collaborations for 20 years—they’re like limited-edition treasures that make fashion history,” she shared. “As a small team in Mexico, we do a lot with very little. This was a chance to see how larger teams operate, explore creativity on a bigger scale, and pay close attention to details like zippers, buttons, and patterns. It was incredibly satisfying.”
The 29-piece collection, launching on October 16, includes ready-to-wear, accessories, and shoes—with those cowboy boots likely to become a season favorite. Rather than reissuing past designs, the collection distills Saravia’s unique vision. It features sandblasted denim in a desert-worn brown, fringed suede skirts, and belts woven in a traditional “petate” pattern. A laser-cut tunic and skirt draw inspiration from “papel picado,” the intricate Mexican paper craft. “I don’t have a laser cutter in my studio, so it was magical to bring this idea to life with H&M,” Saravia noted. Other highlights include suede chaps and a stylish felt hat.
Saravia often finds inspiration in old family photos and the clothing worn by the women in her family. Once again, H&M’s advanced technology helped her translate personal elements into the collection. “We studied vintage buttons from my grandmother’s sewing machine and recreated them in a retro ’50s style,” she said, highlighting the attention to detail.that bring a layered cotton poplin dress to life. Johansson considers this attention to detail one of the collaboration’s biggest strengths. “Every element is carefully chosen—nothing is superfluous,” she noted, adding to the designer: “You aim to create pieces that truly matter, that make a statement, that are versatile and wearable.”
“It’s a simple yet textured collection,” said Saravia. “Pairing the suede jacket with the suede skirt sends a powerful message, but you can also separate the pieces and still achieve an equally strong look. I love how it appeals to so many different women.”
“These collaborations should feel personal and special, grounded in the mutual respect we share,” said H&M’s Ann-Sofie Johansson.
