Like many people, I’ve built up an impressive collection of masks, oils, and bond-repair treatments in my endless quest for stronger, shinier hair. But when stress, pollution, hormonal changes, heat styling, and daily life leave hair brittle, dull, and prone to breakage, topical products can only do so much. Sometimes, the solution needs to come from the inside out.

When my trusted pharmacist suggested I try bamboo extract supplements, I was immediately curious. After all, I’ve long admired this ancient plant—lush, vibrant, and remarkably resilient—but I had no idea it could even be taken as a supplement. In fact, this symbol of longevity in China is valued for the very qualities we often want in our hair: strength, flexibility, and shine.

Why bamboo?

Growing mainly in tropical and subtropical regions, this giant, fast-growing grass has been part of Asian art, architecture, medicine, and daily life for centuries. Today, bamboo forests are destinations in their own right: the ethereal Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is one of Kyoto’s most famous sights, while China’s vast Anji Bamboo Forest served as the stunning backdrop for an iconic fight scene in the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

But bamboo’s appeal goes beyond its natural beauty. The plant is famously strong and flexible—as Bruce Lee once said, “bamboo survives by bending with the wind”—thanks in part to its high silica content. And it’s this very component that has made bamboo extract increasingly popular in the beauty and wellness worlds.

What is bamboo extract?

Derived from the stems and leaves of the evergreen plant, bamboo extract—sometimes called by its scientific name, Bambusa vulgaris, or simply bamboo silica—contains a variety of natural compounds, including minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants like flavonoids. Of particular note is silica, a natural compound that contains silicon, an element that supports the body’s connective tissues and has been studied for its potential skin benefits. In fact, some bamboo extracts can contain up to 70% organic silica.

“Bamboo extract promotes hair growth thanks to its high silicon content, which is known to strengthen the hair shaft and reduce breakage,” says Shabir Daya, a pharmacist and co-founder of Victoria Health. Recently, the company created a supplement with bamboo extract and biotin for its own DoSe brand.

The compound doesn’t just improve hair strength. “Silicon is known to boost collagen production in the body, which helps increase hair thickness,” Daya says. “Since silicon binds to other minerals, it helps nourish the scalp and supports the health of skin, hair, and nails.”

The benefits of bamboo extract for hair

It makes sense that the same compound that makes bamboo so strong and resilient could do the same for our hair. At least, that’s the idea behind the growing popularity of bamboo extract in both supplements and topical hair-care products. The potential benefits include:

– Helping strengthen the hair shaft and reduce breakage
– Supporting collagen and keratin production
– Providing antioxidant protection against environmental stressors
– Supporting scalp and hair follicle health
– Helping hair feel stronger, more elastic, and resilient
– Smoothing the hair cuticle for a shinier, silkier look with less frizz
– Helping protect hair from some of the oxidative stress linked to pollution, UV exposure, and heat styling

And there is some science to back up the hype. While research specifically on bamboo extract for hair is still limited, clinical studies on bioavailable silicon—one of its key components—have shown promising results. In one randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, nine months of oral silicon supplementation significantly increased hair thickness and resistance to breakage in women with fine hair. Another placebo…A controlled study found that taking bamboo extract for 20 weeks significantly reduced hair brittleness.

Bamboo extract is also good for your skin
It’s no surprise that bamboo extract has made its way into skincare, thanks to its antioxidant-rich mix of flavonoids and other plant compounds. Research suggests that certain bamboo extracts may have anti-inflammatory properties that help repair skin. Lab studies have also shown potential antioxidant and anti-pigmentation effects. For example, one study on Bambusa vulgaris found that applying a bamboo gel to the skin helped speed up wound healing—another reason this legendary plant continues to interest beauty and wellness researchers.

Can bamboo extract cause side effects?
As with any supplement, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor or another qualified health professional before adding bamboo extract to your routine, especially if you have a health condition or take medication.

While there aren’t many known risks, it’s also smart to keep this in mind: “Bamboo-based supplements are generally considered safe, but pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid them,” warns Daya. “Also, people with chronic kidney disease should check with their primary care doctor before taking bamboo extract supplements.”

How to use bamboo extract for hair
Taking bamboo extract is as simple as taking most other supplements—it’s easy to find in capsule or tablet form, so you can add it to your daily routine. You can also get it as a powder, which you can mix into smoothies, yogurt, or other foods and drinks.

The powder can also be used directly on your hair as part of a hair care routine. Mixed with water and a nourishing oil like coconut, avocado, or jojoba, it can become a simple DIY conditioning hair mask.
