Protein is having a major wellness moment right now. Since most women in the U.S. aren’t getting enough daily protein (aim for about 7 grams per 20 pounds of body weight), let’s talk about simple ways to add more—like TikTok’s latest trend: protein coffee, or “proffee.”

This morning drink is exactly what it sounds like—coffee mixed with protein powder. “Protein coffee can be an easy way to increase your protein intake, especially for those who don’t feel like eating breakfast,” says Valerie Agyeman, RDN, a dietitian and host of the women’s health podcast Flourish Heights. “It’s not essential, but it’s a convenient way to get extra protein while enjoying your usual caffeine boost.”

My first attempts at proffee weren’t all successful—some protein powders just don’t mix well with coffee (and some taste awful). “The trick is finding a protein powder that doesn’t ruin the flavor,” Agyeman advised. “No one wants chalky coffee.” She recommends plant-based options like pea or soy protein powders and suggests checking labels for artificial sweeteners or sugar alcohols, which can cause digestive issues for some people. She also notes that pregnant women or those with health conditions should consult a doctor before making proffee a habit—there’s a daily caffeine limit to consider, and protein coffee can add up quickly.

I found that warming the milk first, mixing in the protein powder, and then frothing everything together made a big difference in texture. After testing several brands, I landed on Ka’Chava’s vanilla powder—it blends smoothly into coffee (and tastes great in smoothies too). Just half a scoop adds 12 grams of protein to my morning routine. The result is a creamy, lightly vanilla-flavored drink that feels like something from a luxury wellness café—not my own kitchen.

Pair that with eggs, avocado, and a few extras, and I easily hit my 30-gram protein goal for breakfast. Cheers.
