Joan Burstein, the pioneering retailer who transformed British fashion in the 1970s with her boutique Browns, has died at the age of 100. In 2015, the company was acquired by the online retailer Farfetch. The boutique later moved to Brook Street in 2021. Following financial difficulties at Farfetch, which was bought by Coupang in 2023, Browns now operates under the South Korean company’s control.
A vibrant force until the end, Mrs. B celebrated her centenary in Ibiza this February, dancing to a swing band—a fitting tribute to a life that forever changed the landscape of fashion.
