Inside Rebecca Hall and Morgan Spector’s Art-Filled Farmhouse in the Hudson Valley

When actors Rebecca Hall and Morgan Spector first started dating—after meeting in 2013 while co-starring in the Broadway play Machinal—they took a trip to Hudson, New York together and fell in love. They were captivated by the landscape, which reminded Hall of her childhood in the English countryside. As creative people, they were also drawn to the area’s artistic community. They bought a house near downtown Hudson, initially keeping it as a weekend home away from the city. In 2015, the couple married in Saugerties, another Hudson Valley town, and in 2018—when their daughter, Ida, was born—they decided to live in Hudson full time. Wanting wide open space, they found an 1840s farmhouse on forty acres, where they now live.

Hall and Spector are featured in the new book Hudson Folk: Creative People and Places of the Hudson Valley by Amanda Benchley and Tamara Weiss, published by Abrams on September 15. “This environment and its people have led to the birth of galleries, sculpture parks, and artists’ residency programs that are as prevalent in the Hudson Valley as the area’s rambling creeks and apple orchards,” the authors write in the book’s introduction. The book, which focuses on the daily lives and artistic practices of its subjects, also features Deborah Needleman, Reginald Madison, Tamar Adler, Tschabalala Self and Michael Mosby, Rick Anderson, and Ian Felice.

The photographs of Hall and Spector’s home, excerpted exclusively in Vogue, show a space full of art, including Hall’s own paintings. As Hall tells the authors, “I think we’re both into living a beautiful life.”

The couple converted a barn into Hall’s painting studio, plus a gym on the bottom floor, and his and her offices upstairs. “The property had some pre-existing buildings, a natural blueprint for what is now essentially a family compound designed for creativity,” Benchley and Weiss write in the book.

“I find there’s not a normal day,” Spector says, describing their lives in the Hudson Valley.

Spector cooks dinner for the family, including his mother, Jane, who lives with them and helps take care of Ida. “He is the domestic center,” Hall says.

“One of the great joys of our weird lives is that we get these huge chunks of time at home,” Hall says.

“When it gets cold, I go into the painting studio,” Hall says. “When it starts to be spring, I garden all the time. And when I am exhausted from that, I go write.”

“Morgan and Rebecca are part of the local fabric now,” Benchley and Weiss write. “They host an annual New Year’s party and vote at the firehouse, and their new favorite spot is a fried chicken joint/dance hall nearby.”

“The plan is to stay on the property forever, with dreams of building a new house so that Ida, one day, can inherit the farmhouse,” Benchley and Weiss write. “There’s also talk of starting a writers’ retreat and adding editing suites for their film work.”
