In the spring of 2025, long-running rumors were confirmed: four films about the rise of The Beatles are officially in the works. Titled The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, the project will be directed by Oscar winner Sam Mendes. Four of today’s most sought-after young British and Irish actors will star as the iconic quartet: Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison.

Mendes announced the news on March 31, 2025, at CinemaCon during the Sony Pictures presentation. The logline for all four films states: “Each man has his own story, but together they are legendary.”

The films will be four interconnected biopics, each told from a different band member’s perspective. While the exact release order is still unknown, all four are set to hit theaters in April 2028. Mendes describes this as the first “bingeable moment in cinema”—think Barbenheimer, but doubled.

The screenwriting team includes Tony winner Jez Butterworth, Oscar winner Peter Straughan (Conclave), and double Emmy winner Jack Thorne (Adolescence), though it’s unclear which writer is attached to which film.

Mendes called The Beatles “the most significant band of all time,” one that “redefined the culture and stayed with you for a lifetime.” He admitted, “I’ve been trying to do a film for years, but I finally gave up,” feeling the story was too vast for a single movie and that a TV series wasn’t quite right. “There had to be a way to tell the epic story for a new generation,” he added. “I can assure you there is still plenty left to explore, and I think we found a way to do that.”

The cast also includes Saoirse Ronan as photographer Linda Eastman, Paul’s first wife; Mia McKenna-Bruce as Maureen Cox, Ringo’s first wife; Anna Sawai as artist Yoko Ono; and Aimee Lou Wood as model Pattie Boyd, who later married George.

Rounding out the ensemble are James Norton as the band’s longtime manager Brian Epstein; Harry Lawtey as original bassist Stuart Sutcliffe; Farhan Akhtar as sitar maestro Ravi Shankar, a key influence on George; Lucy Boynton as McCartney’s former fiancée Jane Asher; and Morfydd Clark as John’s first wife, Cynthia Lennon. Stay tuned for more updates.
