People considering facelifts now face a tough decision. With social media overflowing with flawless results from surgeons abroad (like the viral “Guadalajara facelift” trend on TikTok), many wonder if they should travel for a procedure that costs half as much—and might deliver better outcomes.
Medical tourism is booming. According to Fortune Business Insights, the global market is expected to grow from $38.2 billion to $162.8 billion by 2032. In countries like Mexico, Thailand, and Hungary, cosmetic and dental procedures cost 25% to 50% less than in the U.S. But price isn’t the only factor—patients are also drawn by exceptional results.
“Today’s clients are more informed and focused on outcomes,” says Melinda Farina, founder of Beauty Brokers Inc. “They’ve seen global results and are requesting specific surgeons, not just locations.”
Farina, whose firm connects patients with plastic surgeons worldwide, notes that Turkey, Italy, Brazil, and Colombia are top destinations. She explains that while U.S. prices are high, the quality doesn’t always match, whereas surgeons abroad often deliver more refined work. “These international surgeons aren’t operating in ‘discount’ markets—many are pioneering new techniques and setting higher standards,” she says. “Some of the most advanced facial and body work is happening outside the U.S.”
At first glance, going abroad for a facelift seems like a no-brainer. But once the excitement fades, the reality of researching a surgeon overseas sets in. This is where a plastic surgery broker can help.
### How Plastic Surgery Brokers Work
Dr. Joshua Rosenberg, a board-certified facial plastic surgeon at Mount Sinai, explains there are different types of brokers. Some are commercial platforms that charge patients for access to vetted surgeons. Others work for health systems or embassies to assist with overseas care. Private brokers typically charge fees to patients or surgeons for matchmaking services.
Dr. Rosenberg is part of Persana, a platform connecting patients with certified U.S. physicians. Signing up is free, but video consultations with recommended doctors start at $300 (text consultations are free).
Beauty Brokers Inc., on the other hand, operates globally. Farina’s team includes 28 plastic surgeons (some active, some retired) who vet practitioners through strict audits. While she can’t share details, she says their international network is built on years of observation, referrals, and firsthand reviews of surgical results. “The U.S. is highly regulated, but our standards abroad are even stricter,” she adds. The Process
Initial consultations with Farina’s senior consultants start at $450. During this session, they review the patient’s medical history and discuss their treatment goals. The team then provides surgeon recommendations, giving patients the chance to meet and speak with their suggested surgeons before deciding. Farina’s team also assists with coordinating treatment plans, overseeing recovery, and other logistics.
The Risks
Traveling abroad for surgery—especially a facelift—carries significant risks, a reality often overlooked after scrolling through social media. Dr. Alexis Parcells, a board-certified plastic surgeon and founder of Parcells Plastic Surgery, emphasizes that proper aftercare is essential for optimal results. She warns that language barriers and limited access to follow-up care can compromise pre- and post-surgery treatment. Additionally, there’s no legal protection if complications arise, meaning corrective procedures could lead to unexpected costs and further health risks.
Dr. Rosenberg adds that he regularly sees patients who’ve had botched surgeries abroad. “These aren’t rare cases—studies show significantly higher complication rates with overseas plastic surgery,” he says. Facial nerve injuries and permanent disfigurement after facelifts are among the serious issues he encounters.
The Broker Problem
Many brokers aren’t medical professionals, which Dr. Rosenberg says can prevent them from fully understanding a patient’s needs or ensuring a safe surgeon match. “Even well-informed patients struggle to grasp the complexities of surgery—details matter,” he explains.
He also cautions against private brokers, as financial incentives may override patient care. “The financial industry is heavily regulated, yet brokers still prioritize profit. Plastic surgery brokers have no oversight,” he says. Dr. Parcells agrees, noting that some surgeons pay brokers to steer patients their way, regardless of suitability.
Companies like Beauty Broker Inc. and Persana charge fees only to patients, which experts view as a more transparent model. “We never accept payments from surgeons or clinics—no kickbacks, ever,” Farina states.
Advice for Patients
Experts stress thorough research, especially when using a broker for overseas surgery. Vet both the broker and their recommended surgeons. Dr. Parcells suggests checking a surgeon’s board certification, experience, complication rates, and follow-up care options. Above all, trust your instincts. “If something feels wrong, walk away,” she says.
