When Laufey first spoke with Vogue, she was a 24-year-old newcomer just starting out. Now, as she joins The Run-Through, she’s a Grammy-winning star—a household name.
It was only natural that the Icelandic talent would become one of Gen Z’s favorite “pop girls.” Her music effortlessly blends jazz, pop, and classical, defying genres. But with her deeply personal new album, A Matter of Time, Laufey is ready to prove herself all over again.
For those who don’t know her story, Laufey’s rise was organic. During the pandemic, stuck at home with little to do, she did what many Gen Z-ers did—scrolled through TikTok. Then she decided to post a video of herself singing an original song, Like the Movies.
“It was a jazz standard,” Laufey recalls. “I shared it online, and people connected with it. It was surprising because the audience was so young—I hoped for that, but I’d never seen it happen before.”
Overnight, she went viral, eventually landing a record deal. But she did things differently: “I didn’t go to the industry asking for support,” she says. “I built my audience first. By the time I signed a deal, I already had a strong following, which gave me full creative control. No one tells me what to release—they trust my vision.”
For her latest album, Laufey teamed up with producers Spencer Stewart and Aaron Dessner, diving into deeper themes than ever before—love, friendship, and even reflections on race in songs like Snow White.
But music isn’t her only passion. Laufey has also been exploring fashion, with a deep appreciation for style and its history—something she shares with her twin sister, Junia. These days, she’s a front-row regular at Lanvin, Chloé, and Chanel, keeping up with fashion’s ever-changing scene.
