Happy Pride Month!

In 1978, Harvey Milk—the first openly gay elected official in the U.S.—asked artist Gilbert Baker to design a flag celebrating the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. (If Milk’s name sounds familiar, it might be because the Trump administration recently tried—in a sadly predictable move—to remove his name from the USNS Harvey Milk, a Navy ship honoring the veteran and San Francisco leader who was assassinated that same year.)

The original rainbow flag was a grassroots effort: Baker and 30 volunteers hand-dyed and stitched the first two flags in a San Francisco community center attic. The design has evolved over time, but today’s most common version features six stripes—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet.

Which brings us to the stunning rainbow jewelry we’re highlighting. You might think wearing colorful gems is a small gesture in the face of a historic fight for equality—but imagine your watermelon tourmaline ring or dazzling earrings sparking a conversation about Stonewall, the 1969 uprising that launched the modern LGBTQ+ movement.

As the late, great writer Edmund White once said of Stonewall: “Before that night, we thought ‘homosexuality’ was just a medical term. Suddenly, we realized we could be a minority—with rights, a culture, and a purpose.” Rights, culture, purpose—what could matter more this year than defending and expanding those freedoms?

Among our picks: Eden Presley’s Believe in Love pendant—a flying pig with rainbow sapphire wings. Before Stonewall, the idea of a thriving gay rights movement seemed as unlikely as a pig taking flight. But as Congress’s first trans representative, Sarah McBride, put it: “Change always seems impossible until it’s inevitable.”

Happy Pride!
