It’s well known that Morgane Sézalory, the founder of Sézane, never actually planned to build a “brand”—at least not in the traditional sense. Her business grew naturally: her first project was Les Composantes, a curated eBay store focused on vintage pieces, which later turned into designing clothes inspired by her favorite second-hand finds. That’s how Sézane’s now-familiar look came to be.

“I just wanted to find a way to work and create a job that made sense for me,” she tells Vogue. “I think if I’d been more aware or more mature, I would have thought it was impossible. It was very instinctive and organic, without any strategy.”

Whether she planned it or not, Sézalory has now built a profitable global brand. After watching it grow over 13 years, she recently decided to take it in a “new direction.” For several reasons—mostly personal ones, which she shared in an article for Vogue Business—Sézalory took time to reflect on how she wanted Sézane to move forward.

“I didn’t have time to make it the brand of my dreams—because I never thought I would create a brand—then it just happened,” she explains. “It made me slow down a bit … and ask, ‘would this brand excite me if I weren’t the founder?’”

This shift is mostly about visuals, with a new logo and campaign imagery. The shoot features Imaan Hammam, styled by Alex Carl and photographed by Mark Kean, showcasing the first autumn collection of this new era.

For Sézalory, Sézane has always been personal, shaped by her own taste and style. That hasn’t changed: “I wanted to make it more of who I am today.” As for how that shows up in the clothes? With a continued “love” of dressing people for their “everyday lives,” Sézalory promises to keep the essentials while also aiming to create pieces with more “emotion, strength, and confidence.”

Voluminous shoulders and dramatic funnel-neck collars—seen on short jackets in faux-fur, wool, and leather, as well as trench coats—reflect this new direction. Texture was also key in the final designs, with a range of fabrics across the ready-to-wear and accessories. A roomy, slouchy tote is likely to become as popular as the brand’s famous basket bag.

To honor Sézane’s vintage roots, the brand is also launching a pre-loved line, aptly named Les Composantes. On the 21st of every month, 10% of global net sales from this line will go to Demain, a philanthropic program created by the brand. One-of-a-kind pieces, curated by Morgane or a guest, will be available to buy starting in September.
