Lizzie Owens’s moodboard for her 6397 resort collection was filled with paparazzi shots of Laura Dern from the early 2000s—specifically, the actor with her then-partner Ben Harper and their young kids, often spotted at the Sundance Festival in Utah. “You know, my neck of the woods!” Owens joked during a preview.
Dern’s style back then was a relaxed, unpolished mix of Hollywood glamour and indie cool. Her clothes looked personal, lived-in—this was before stylists and runway-to-paparazzi trends took over celebrity fashion. Owens didn’t try to copy Dern’s look, though. Instead, she saw her as a kind of style muse.
The collection kicks off with a sleek moleskin coat, cut slimmer than 6397’s usual relaxed fits—still androgynous but more flattering. A sleeveless double-breasted coat and a sleeveless blazer followed the same clean lines. A standout was a black dress pieced together from different fabrics. But the real stars were the knits: a color-blocked tank, a second-skin ribbed top, and long-sleeve tees printed on the inside to look faded on the outside. The photos don’t fully capture them, but they show Owens’s knack for playful twists on classics.
Thanks to Owens’s collaboration with 6397 founder Stella Ishii, the brand has gotten a fresh, youthful update. It still has the cult-favorite qualities—luxe fabrics, easy silhouettes—but now feels more in sync with New York’s street style. The showroom was packed with young fashion editors, many discovering the label for the first time. Could 6397 be the next under-the-radar NYC It-brand? We wouldn’t argue with that.
