Kaia Gerber has a Re/Done T-shirt in her closet that she bought about ten years ago and still wears all the time. “I wear it constantly, and it just keeps getting better,” says the 24-year-old model, actress, and Vogue September cover star, praising its soft, worn-in feel. “That really shows it’s the only thing you could ever need in life.”

Growing up in California, Gerber has always considered T-shirts and jeans the core of her wardrobe. “I always said, ‘You just need a good pair of Levi’s shorts and a white T-shirt, and that’s it.’ Then when Re/Done came out, I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is exactly what I’ve been talking about—and the best version of it.'”

This isn’t just talk. Gerber is so committed to the brand—which has become a favorite among LA’s cool crowd and those who want to look like them—that she became an investor, creative partner, and advisory board member earlier this year. Next week, the brand launches Kaia Vol. 1, a 60-piece capsule collection that brings that partnership to life.

“What I’ve always loved about Re/Done is that even as it’s grown, you never lose that personal, intimate shopping experience—which, to me, is a big part of its appeal.” At this stage in her life, Gerber adds, she’s “been the face of things, but I’m ready to get more hands-on and creative. Then I met Meredith, and I thought, I don’t care what it takes, I need to work with this person.”

Meredith is Meredith Kahn, Re/Done’s head of design, who joined just over a year ago. One of her first projects was working with Gerber on the collection, but the two quickly discovered they thought alike, sharing surprisingly similar references and going on vintage-shopping trips for inspiration (for the record, Gerber is a heavy Pinterest user, with over 40 inspiration boards—each with elaborate names—active at any time). “We have the same sensibilities,” Kahn says.

“For the collection, it felt like Kaia gave the brand permission to expand,” Kahn adds. “Re/Done was originally about T-shirts and jeans, of course—that casual, laid-back California lifestyle brand. But at the same time, I’m from New York, and Kaia has lived in New York and has that New York edge, that sophistication. Having Kaia as part of the brand became an invitation to bring a bit more of that polished, urban spirit into the collection.”

That style was also influenced by “a French librarian from 1969” and a touch of Jane Birkin, the eternal muse of effortless cool. The result includes bohemian tie-front blouses, slightly cropped polos, a silky babydoll dress with ruching at the bust, pinstriped blazers, and outerwear like a leather trench, a vintage-style shearling, and a khaki officer’s coat. Both Kahn and Gerber say that when creating the collection, they focused not just on how it looked, but also on how it felt to wear—much of the magic happened during the fittings.

Asked about favorite pieces, Gerber points to the jeans named after her, of course—a slim-straight cut—and the Walker dress, a fine-knit crimson mini with long sleeves and a large cut-out in the back. Kahn, meanwhile, wanted to recreate a comically oversized workwear-style jacket she’s long loved, and so the Worken jacket was born, with its slouchy shape made from faded, worn-in canvas. That both pieces—the flirty dress and the masculine jacket—can exist in one collection goes back to Birkin as their guiding star, someone who could mix two opposing styles and somehow make them work. Indeed, the pair imagined the collection as something that could go from day to night and fit into the closets of a vaA variety of women, from femmes to tomboys, are represented. For what it’s worth, this editor found the cheeky slogan tees—one reads “Plot Twist”—especially charming.

The collection comes to life in its first campaign, shot by Bella Newman, with creative direction from Jen Brill and styling by Taylor McNeil. It shows Gerber as a librarian, reading alone in her city apartment, with a dusky cityscape behind her. “It’s so refreshing, as a woman, to be sexy on your own terms and in a way that you genuinely find sexy—rather than other people telling you that you look sexy or that you’re doing something sexy,” Gerber says. “It was such a wonderful space to play in, because it felt very safe and entirely on our own terms.”

Talking to the duo, it’s clear this collection was a labor of love, in the sense that Kahn and Kaia Gerber truly connected during the process. “Meredith has been such an incredible mentor to me in so many ways,” Gerber says. “After the shoot, we all went out for dinner and drinks, and Meredith and I were in tears, telling each other how much we mean to one another.”

“To discover yourself with someone who has impeccable taste and who truly sees you—not just where you are now, but all the different possibilities of who you could become—that’s who Meredith has become for me,” Gerber continues. “And to be able to create art from that kind of relationship is beyond my wildest dreams.”
