Helle Mardahl’s designs are instantly recognizable. The Danish designer creates mouth-blown glass pieces in soft pastels and vibrant rainbow shades so cheerful and glossy, they could easily be mistaken for candy—in fact, one of her signature collections is called “bon bon.” Since starting her own label in 2017, Mardahl has attracted a worldwide following who love decorating their homes with her wavy dishes and sculptural cups, each shaped in its own unique, often surprising way. This individuality comes from working with glass using traditional techniques, but it also reflects an appreciation for imperfection. A one-of-a-kind piece can turn everyday moments into special rituals and elevate a table setting from ordinary to intentional. With this thoughtful approach, Mardahl now introduces an exclusive collection for Design Within Reach (DWR), just in time for the holidays.

Since its founding in the late 1990s, DWR has become the go-to destination for iconic furniture classics—like the Eames lounger—alongside contemporary designs, all curated with a timeless perspective. The collaboration between DWR and Mardahl came about naturally. “We were at Central Saint Martins at the same time,” says Omar Nobil, the retailer’s creative director. Both were studying fashion, during a period when several Danish designers, including Stine Goya, were also at the school. “I was aware of Helle and had followed her work for years,” he explains. After visiting her showroom during a Copenhagen design festival, talks about working together began.

Mardahl first experimented with mouth-blown glass in a 2009 art installation. From there, she developed a lamp shaped like an egg, which surprisingly didn’t feature the bright colors she’s now known for—instead, it had a spotted pattern in white, aubergine, and black. “I was really against color at first,” she admits, referring to solid shades rather than patterns. But she soon warmed to the idea and shifted toward more lively hues. “We tried all sorts of colors—pink, then honey. Eventually, it turned into bubblegum shades and looked like bonbons scattered on a table. It was so pleasing to see.” This sense of delight is central to why her work resonates with so many people—it simply feels good to be around her creations. “What’s compelling about Helle’s work is how it blends traditional craftsmanship with a forward-looking aesthetic,” Nobil notes. “It evokes joy and offers a kind of escapism.”

Keen to include her work in the DWR portfolio, Nobil asked Mardahl to design pieces that would create a distinctive hosting experience. “We gave her just a few words as guidance, but Helle built a whole tablescape universe, expanding into categories we hadn’t even discussed initially—beautiful objects that are both functional and a joy to behold,” he says. While this collection is slightly more restrained in color compared to her main line, it still carries her signature playful surrealism. “These pieces bring something extraordinary into everyday life,” Nobil adds.

Mardahl agrees. “It’s been really fun to think differently with this collaboration—to create objects that are simpler than usual but still have a pop of color,” she says. The collection includes tableware, glassware, vases, candleholders, dishes, and three types of lighting.

Even after all these years, Mardahl describes her process as very organic. “Everything with glass and working with glass…””It’s magical. You never know what the result will be,” she remarks. This sense of surprise and joy enhances the customer’s experience. “When people step into our Copenhagen shop, they always smile, and I believe it’s because glass engages all the senses.”

The Helle Mardahl Collection will debut exclusively at DWR in North America, available online and displayed in select stores starting October 14.
