Patrick Bateman is turning 25 today—well, sort of. Mary Harron’s film adaptation of American Psycho, Bret Easton Ellis’s novel, starring Christian Bale as Bateman, is now officially a quarter-century old. Add to that the news that Luca Guadagnino is working on his own version, possibly with Austin Butler in the lead role, and it’s no surprise the terrifyingly chiseled (seriously, how?) financier-turned-serial killer is trending on TikTok and the runways alike.

It’s not just about pinstripe suits, though those have been everywhere from Balenciaga to Gabriela Hearst. Some designers have directly referenced Bateman himself. Louis Gabriel Nouchi recently created a collection inspired by the original corporate bro, casting Emily in Paris’s Lucas Bravo as the lead. Meanwhile, Anthony Vaccarello admitted American Psycho was on his mind while designing Saint Laurent’s Fall 2024 menswear show—the one filled with Monsieur Saint Laurent lookalikes. And since Butler is a Saint Laurent ambassador, could Vaccarello dress him in those sharp double-breasted suits, just as Giorgio Armani did for Richard Gere in American Gigolo? Something to ponder.

It’s a little unsettling that this polished-but-psychotic ideal of masculinity is back in the spotlight. Then again, maybe it’s just that men look good in suits—and Bale’s Bateman might be the best example.
