It feels like we’ve time-traveled back to our old Tumblr days: Kesha strutting through New York, Kristen Stewart rocking suspenders on the red carpet, and celebrities swapping delicate wire frames for bold black glasses. Honestly, it might as well be 2012 again.
This was bound to happen. After years of ’90s and Y2K nostalgia ruling fashion, a 2010s revival was the next logical step. With indie sleaze making a comeback (thanks to Charli XCX’s brat summer, boho-chic, and the return of McQueen’s skull motif), we can’t say we’re shocked.
For those of us who once popped lenses out of Wayfarers to copy Skrillex or slathered on glitter long before Euphoria, revisiting this era might feel a little cringe. But lately, celebrities have been bringing back the trends of the last decade—and doing it in a way that doesn’t make us recoil like before.
Take suspenders, for example. They might conjure images of Mumford & Sons and folk-rock hipsters, but when Kristen Stewart wore Thom Browne suspenders to the Sacramento premiere, she gave them a punk, feminine twist. Sure, she’s not the first (hi, Beyoncé), but it’s a far cry from the barn wedding aesthetic, making the revival feel fresh.
The same goes for oversized glasses, once a staple of the early hipster scene. As the trend swings back from delicate Bayonetta-style frames, Tracee Ellis Ross and Dua Lipa have both embraced thick, statement-making glasses. Lipa went for round shapes, Ross chose square—there’s room for everything from sweet Jessica Day vibes to full-on Skrillex energy.
But the biggest sign of the 2010s comeback? Kesha herself. With a new single (Yippee-Ki-Yay featuring T-Pain) and an album on the way, the queen of the era is back—and so is the decade she defined.
