Exactly one year ago today, Toronto-based designer Warren Steven Scott was enjoying a vacation in Italy—but more specifically, he was following Italian pop star Marco Mengoni on his summer tour. “I traveled to Bologna, Rome, and Florence, and had tickets to his shows in each city,” Scott says. “I’ve always been interested in Italian culture. Italy was one of the first countries I ever visited.”
At the time, Scott—who is Indigenous and from the Nlaka’pamux Nation in British Columbia—had just discovered Mengoni’s music. He became a fan not only of his unique voice but also of his theatrical stage style. (Mengoni, styled by Dua Lipa’s go-to Lorenzo Posocco for the tour, wore everything from custom Versace to Valentino.)
“I noticed he wears a lot of monochromatic looks, but also lots of embellishments and decorative details,” says Scott. “I really connected with the way he dressed.” Scott was so inspired by Mengoni’s wardrobe that, a year later, he’s releasing a full menswear collection based on him.
The new line, called “The Place Where We Went Together, Remember?,” launches today and marks Scott’s first time designing men’s clothing. (Scott started with sculptural earrings, which are still his bestsellers, but he recently began making womenswear too.) When he felt ready to take on menswear, he says he was naturally drawn back to the boldness and drama of Mengoni’s personal style. “As a creative challenge, I asked myself what I would do if I were asked to design Marco’s tour wardrobe,” Scott says.
The result? A lively mix of new men’s pieces that definitely grab attention. And the best part is, you don’t need to be a music superstar to wear them. The clothes, priced from $200 to $2,500 USD, are far from everyday basics: there are silky wrap-tied blouses and embroidered sequin coats. “Even though this collection is meant for the stage, it’s also designed for special occasions,” says Scott. “I wanted to design what I would wear out to dinner. The pieces are meant to be fun, enjoyed, and noticed.”
Standout items include an embroidered rose coat and sequined button-up shirts that can light up any room. “There are lots of sequins, ribbons—very sheer fabrics,” says Scott. “I wanted pieces with a lot of movement that photograph well.” His wrap-tied shirts and blouses, available in various colors, can be tied around the neck or left loose. “In my jewelry work, I use a lot of long oval shapes, which are a signature shape of the Pacific Northwest,” says Scott. “I used that as inspiration to think about how I could elongate my clothing too.”
Many of Scott’s other pieces can be styled or worn in multiple ways. He created colorful trousers—in bright pink or green—that can be buttoned off at the knee and turned into shorts. He says this approach was inspired by a musician like Mengoni’s life on the road. “If you’re on tour, you want to give each city a different look and vibe,” says Scott. “I was thinking about how a piece could change and create a whole new outfit.”
More broadly, his clothes carry a superstar spirit—a feeling Scott believes anyone can bring into their daily life. “A lot of people have events where they can let themselves have fun with fashion,” says Scott. “I wanted to celebrate dressing up.” As for other notable artists he’d love to see in his new menswear line, now that it’s out in the world—besides, of course, Mengoni? “Erykah Badu needs the white coat with the sequin rose motifs, with a big hat,” says Scott. “Pedro Pascal would also look great.”…d in the blouses.” We couldn’t agree more.
