Sabrina Carpenter wasn’t home when her dogs – 14-year-old Goodwin and 1-year-old Louie – turned her family’s house into their own Dogue magazine cover shoot. Even without the pop star there to narrate, the experience gave her family a new appreciation for how tiring fame can be.

“My parents were like, ‘Wow, we get why this is actually hard work for you,'” Carpenter laughs during our phone call. “They said, ‘This was such a long day for the dogs – we don’t know how you do it!'”

Carpenter’s parents didn’t just watch the shoot – they helped out. Her mother Elizabeth made custom Dogue bandanas for the dogs. The result? Goodwin and Louie channeling Thelma & Louise in a white toy Maybach (a reference to Carpenter’s “Manchild” music video). Her mom also assisted stylist Lindsey Hartman in dressing the dogs in elaborate Elizabethan collars and tiaras, and later, blonde wigs resembling Sabrina’s hair as they lounged on a bed surrounded by American Girl dolls. When asked if the dolls were hers from childhood, she groans: “Yeah, unfortunately.”

Goodwin, a mix of Maltese, Lhasa apso, Yorkshire terrier and long-haired Chihuahua, has been with Carpenter since she was 13. “They call them Angel Doll pups,” she says. “Really they’re just mutts, but he’s a very special mutt.” The dog got his name from Carpenter’s short-lived Fox show “The Goodwin Games.” Though the series only lasted seven episodes, she says: “I still love the name – it’s part of my history forever.”

Louie, a golden-brown Cavapoo with a white belly stripe, is new to the family but already accustomed to Carpenter’s busy lifestyle. Both dogs join her on tour, though they stay backstage. “They wait in my dressing room during shows,” she says. “They’ve never seen me perform live, which is too bad because I think they’d enjoy it.”

While we wait for her upcoming album “Man’s Best Friend,” we asked Carpenter about her pups:

What are your dogs’ best qualities?
“It sounds cliché, but they’re both just so loving. Some dogs aren’t friendly, but mine are sweet little cuddlers.”

Who would voice your dogs in a movie?
“Goodwin would be Jeff Bridges – he’s always seemed like an old man. Beau Bridges played my dad in ‘The Goodwin Games,’ so I associate them with the Bridges brothers. For Louie? Probably Tom Holland – he’s energetic.”

Do you use a special voice to talk to your dogs?
“It’s kind of silly. Dogs bring out our true selves. When I’m talking to them like that, I think ‘This is the real me.’ We just want to imagine what they’d sound like, so we try different voices.”What are your dogs’ weirdest nicknames, and how did you come up with them?
Goodwin’s alter ego is Badwin—pretty self-explanatory. When he’s not being a good boy, he’s Badwin. Louie is still new to the world, so when he’s naughty, I call him Lucifer. But most of the time, he’s just LouLou.

Where is one place you wish you could take your dogs?
They’re small, so they can go almost anywhere—except restaurants that don’t allow dogs. I wish I could take them there.

Where is the strangest place you’ve taken your dogs?
They’ve come on tour with me. They wait in my dressing room during shows, so they’ve never actually seen me perform live. That’s too bad—I think they’d enjoy it. Tour life is wild for them—they ride on the bus like little rockstars.

If you could tell your dogs one thing, what would it be?
I’d ask if they think I’m crazy. I’ve always wondered—do dogs watch us running around doing human stuff and think we’re weird? Then I’d tell them I love them more than anyone else on the planet.

What is the most human thing your dogs do?
Goodwin is super empathetic—he just knows when you’re sick or upset. His eyes are so expressive, like he’s got a million stories. Louie’s most human trait? His ears. He’s an amazing listener—when you call him, he actually comes.

What is the most dog thing your dogs do?
Goodwin ignores me half the time I call him—classic dog behavior. They decide when they want to be your pet or their own boss. Actually, maybe that’s Goodwin’s most human trait.
Louie? Pure puppy energy. He’s always bouncing around, ready to play—total Energizer Bunny.

What are their full names?
Just Goodwin and Louie. Like Rihanna, they don’t need last names.

Astrological signs?
Goodwin’s an Aries, Louie’s a Taurus.

Favorite toys?
Goodwin loves his soft bear—that’s about all he can handle. Louie? Anything we throw—he’s a fetch machine.

Favorite meals?
Besides begging for table scraps, they love Freshpet wet food with some fresh chicken mixed in.

Worst habits?
Goodwin sometimes has accidents—he’s getting older, maybe he needs doggie diapers. Louie gets overexcited and humps things… including legs.

Strangest habits?
Goodwin grunts to get attention. Louie spins in circles before he poops.
