Michelle Obama is honoring her late mother through what she wears.

The former first lady joined her husband, former President Barack Obama, today for a speech to stakeholders at the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, Illinois. (The center opens to the public on June 19.) For the event, Obama chose to pay tribute to her mother, Marian Robinson, who passed away in 2024 at age 86.

Obama and her longtime stylist, Meredith Koop, worked with Acne Studios to create a custom piece: a calf-length pencil skirt featuring a sepia portrait of her mother as a young woman—her favorite photo of her, Obama noted at the center. The design was inspired by look 29 from the Scandinavian brand’s fall 2026 collection, which originally had a black-and-white Paul Kooiker photo on the skirt. She kept the styling close to the runway, pairing the skirt with a brown short-sleeve T-shirt and brown pointed pumps.

The choice was especially meaningful because Robinson was born on Chicago’s South Side, where the Obama Presidential Center is located. She was also a constant presence during the Obama years, moving into the White House with the First Family. “We needed her. The girls needed her. And she ended up being our rock through it all,” the Obamas wrote on Medium after Robinson’s death.

The former president seemed emotional when he saw the skirt. “He’s really messed up,” Michelle told the crowd. “He didn’t know it existed until just a few minutes ago, and I’ve had a few weeks to get used to the beauty of this skirt, but it’s hitting him hard—for good reason.”

Robinson shared a loving bond with her former son-in-law, as the Obamas described on Medium. “On Election Night in 2008, when the news broke that Barack would soon carry the weight of the world, she was there, holding his hand,” they wrote. Michelle echoed that feeling at the Obama Center. “She was so proud of her son-in-law and the man he is and has been to our family, always dreaming probably way too big, but always making it happen,” she said, holding his hand.

Obama shared her experience with grief and loss on Instagram. “We lost my mother a year ago, but somehow, it almost feels like she’s with us more and more each day,” she wrote in 2025. “I notice it in the way I channel her when I’m giving advice to my daughters, or catching up with my brother Craig, or sitting down for dinner with Barack. She’s not with us, but she is.” Today, by wearing her mother’s portrait on her skirt, Michelle Obama is keeping her close.
