You know the Kelly bag from Hermès, and you’re familiar with Margaux from The Row. Now, allow us to introduce you to Edith. As the flagship piece from Adam Lippes’s debut made-in-France bag collection, Edith is already drawing attention at his appointment-only Fifth Avenue salon. The bag features a trim shoulder strap, an hourglass shape, a smooth, logo-free calf leather exterior, and an 18-karat gold-plated clasp.

This first venture into handbags has been in the works for 18 months, a timeline driven by the designer’s focus on quality. “It’s what we aim for with our clothing as well,” Lippes explains. “We source from the best mills and the best yarn suppliers. We’re not following a typical merchandising plan—we’re simply focused on creating beauty in everything we do.”

Those with closets full of designer bags will appreciate the collection’s fine details. “All the hardware was custom-developed for us,” Lippes notes, including the latches on the box calf Latch bag, which produce a satisfying click. “That click,” he laughs, “took about 12 rounds of adjustments.” The interiors received just as much attention, lined in nappa or suede and finished luxuriously, making the bags delightfully lightweight.

The collection also includes a soft pebble leather style with double zips, called Vacances for its casual vibe (available in two sizes), and a mini pochette with a chain strap. For now, these pieces will only be available in his stores in New York, Palm Beach, and Houston. “I wanted to keep it elevated,” he says, “and it’s also a new project for us—a test.”

A second collection is already underway, but don’t expect an endless array of styles. Lippes kept his late mother, an interior designer, in mind while developing the line. “I remember growing up, she didn’t own a thousand bags. If something was practical, she’d keep it forever.” She would have approved of Edith.
