These days, nursery decor seems to fall into two extremes. On one side, you have ultra-minimalist rooms that look like bland adult spaces—all beige with no fun toys in sight. On the other, there’s an explosion of bright colors that feels completely disconnected from the rest of the house.
“That’s the trap—you can easily end up at either extreme. And honestly, I’ve made both mistakes myself,” says Joseph Altuzarra, the designer and father of three who’s launching his second kids’ collection with West Elm on July 28. For him, decorating children’s spaces has been a learning process centered on one question: How do you create a room that sparks a child’s imagination while also including pieces that will grow with them?
His first West Elm kids’ collection in 2023 tackled this challenge, offering refined yet playful pieces that could transition from toddler to pre-teen years. “Selfishly, these were the exact items I’d been searching for and was thrilled to bring into my own home,” he admits.
Now, his second collection—a 58-piece line ranging from $25 to $1,700—builds on that same idea but with bolder designs. After noticing how much people loved the standout pieces from his first line, Altuzarra decided to take things further.
“That was a big lesson for me—our customers really respond to statement pieces, and I see that in my fashion collections too,” he says. This time, the playful designs include a garden-inspired quilt with 3D flowers, a hand-painted botanical dresser (his personal favorite), a mint green fluted bookcase, and an oversized wicker bird cage (his kids’ top pick).
The collection’s mood board was just as eclectic, featuring Tim Walker’s surreal photos of indoor trees and stacks of colorful mattresses straight out of The Princess and the Pea. “I wanted it to feel like nature was slowly taking over the room,” he explains. “When I read bedtime stories with my kids, we sometimes pretend we’re inside the book—if it’s a fairy tale, we imagine ourselves in that world. There’s something really sweet about that idea.”
While the botanical theme shines in textiles like embroidered pillows and vine-covered curtains, Altuzarra also applied it to functional pieces. A rattan toy basket is shaped like a bird, and a coat hook resembles a blooming branch.
Practicality was key—storage solutions and rounded edges cater to accident-prone toddlers—but some items, like a carved green mirror, could easily work in an adult space too. It all comes back to that balance: creating a room that delights both kids and parents.
“The collection is all about the wonder and magic of nature,” he says. “These whimsical pieces capture a special feeling people want in their homes.”
