This Tuesday on The Run-Through, Chioma Nnadi sits down with British Vogue’s November 2025 cover star, Gwyneth Paltrow, to discuss Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme—undoubtedly one of the year’s most anticipated films.
The riveting drama follows an ambitious young table tennis player named Marty Mauser (Timothée Chalamet) and the increasingly extreme risks he takes to prove his supremacy. Paltrow co-stars as Kay Stone, the glamorous former movie star whom Mauser romances in London and later New York. The cast also includes Kevin O’Leary, Odessa A’zion, Fran Drescher, Sandra Bernhard, and Tyler, the Creator.
In her conversation with Chioma, Gwyneth talks about being impressed by the script, co-written by Safdie and Ronald Bronstein; feeling nervous to return to a film set; Miyako Bellizzi’s beautiful costumes; Chalamet’s beautiful skin; and the kind of role she’d be interested in taking on next.
They also discuss more iconic fashion moments from Gwyneth’s filmography (the Calvin Klein in Sliding Doors! The Donna Karan in Great Expectations!); the wellness world’s recent focus on protein and fiber; Gwyneth’s refreshing perspective on aging (“I don’t want to try to look like I’m 28 years old”); and more. Read an excerpt from the interview below—then listen to the full conversation above.
Chioma Nnadi: I saw Marty Supreme last week, and I think it’s one of my favorite films in a long time. It was so much fun—I want to see it again and share it with friends and family. It’s such a fabulous movie, and a cool choice for your major return to the big screen. You’ve mentioned in interviews that you decided to come back now that your kids are out of the house, and that you felt a little rusty. What was particularly challenging for you? Because you didn’t look rusty at all.
Gwyneth Paltrow: Thank you so much. I think it’s like anything—when you do something frequently, it becomes second nature. It’s that Malcolm Gladwell idea of 10,000 hours. When you take a long break from something you used to do all the time, you start to wonder, Do I still know how to do this? I was really nervous. I worried about whether I’d remember how to learn lines, or how to tap into deep emotion. Is all of that still there?
I remember the first day of filming was a scene where we’re rehearsing a play. Since I started in theater, I thought, Oh my God, thank goodness—I’m back on the boards, working through a scene. It felt like a perfect blessing that my way back into acting was through working out a scene onstage. And then it started to come back to me, and I remembered how to do it. But yes, I was nervous.
CN: Who did you channel to play Kay? And what was your reaction when you first read the script?
GP: When I read the script, I thought, Wow, this is so original—how is this going to work? It felt very ambitious on the page. There were all these breathless scenes in cabs and cars, trying to get the dog, mixed with these very human moments. I just thought it was really ambitious and wondered how the director would pull it off—but I trusted that he absolutely would.
I thought a lot about Grace Kelly—a darker, more complicated version of Grace Kelly. She was this huge movie star who stopped acting to get married and seemed a bit broken afterward, in a way. That felt parallel to Kay: she had this big film career, then got married and stopped, and she’s deeply broken because she gave up her dream for a sense of security. Then her son was killed in the war, leaving her with this profound sadness.
