A few months ago, at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, Alia Bhatt told Vogue, “I truly thrive in this sort of chaos, and the chaos always tends to find us.” Now, in a calmer moment, she reflects on her Life in Looks.

She begins with a gasp of reminiscence. The first look is from a press conference for her debut film, Student of the Year (2012), where she wore a navy blazer with pink piping, a white mini-dress, and a matching Alice band. “I do not recognize this human being,” she says. Method dressing for press tours wasn’t common in the 2010s, but her brief was to channel her character, leading to preppy tailoring and cute hair accessories. “All I remember was nerves!” she admits.

Next is her 2017 Vogue India cover, shot by Greg Swales and styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania. “I like this headline, ‘What makes Alia Bhatt the coolest girl in Bollywood?’—I like to be known as cool!” she says.

Moving to the 2017 film Badrinath Ki Dulhania, she performs the high-energy “Tamma Tamma” dance in a simple costume of jeans, a jacket, and a graphic tee alongside longtime collaborator Varun Dhawan. “You don’t make that kind of friendship every day,” she remarks.

At the 2018 Lux Golden Rose Awards, during one of her busiest years, she wore a white corseted Netta BenShabu gown with soft Hollywood waves and strong winged eyeliner. For friend Sonam Kapoor’s wedding, she chose a bold lime-green lehenga by Sabyasachi Mukherjee. “It was the beginning of my journey,” she says, toward statement looks that celebrate her Indian identity.

Her style evolution continued with high-impact ensembles: a cream suit with orange zigzag stripes for the 2019 Berlin premiere of Gully Boy; a diaphanous white couture sari by Rimple & Harpreet Narula for the 2022 Gangubai Kathiawadi premiere, adorned with embroidery, jaali work, pearls, and sequins; and for her wedding to Ranbir Kapoor, a chai-dipped white-and-gold Sabyasachi sari embroidered with an inside joke, accessorized with a maang tikka. For their godh bharai, she wore a custom mango-yellow outfit by Raji Ramniq with jewelry from her mother-in-law.

Further personal milestones followed: cradling her baby bump in a liquid-gold lamé gown by Gauri & Nainika at the 2022 TIME100 Impact Awards; walking the Manish Malhotra bridal couture show postpartum in a gilded silver-and-gold two-piece. The 2023 press tour for Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani featured a Barbie pink sari; at the 2024 Joy Awards, styled by Rhea Kapoor in an exquisite Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla sari, she noted, “For me, displaying craftsmanship on a global stage will trump any sort of moment in life, especially in the age of fast fashion and AI.” For the 2024 Met Gala, she wore a Prabal Gurung sari with a dramatic 20-foot pallu.

Bhatt concludes with her Cannes appearance, wearing a custom Gucci sari that blended Italian glamour with Indian exuberance, featuring the GG monogram. The moment marked both her Cannes debut and her first appearance as Gucci’s first Indian brand ambassador.See all of Alia Bhatt’s preppy looks, painted pantsuits, and chai-dipped saris from her Life in Looks feature above.
