This week’s question comes from a Vogue editor: “I hate bucket hats, and baseball caps feel too ‘bro-y,’ but I need sun protection—what are my options?”

First, let me say—I love a good hat. The quirkier, the better. In summer, I lean into classics, so you’ll usually find me in a bucket hat at the beach or pool. But I get it—they can sometimes feel a bit juvenile. That said, they’re undeniably practical for sun coverage, and many designers have elevated the style to avoid those kiddie vibes.

Loro Piana’s crochet cashmere bucket hat in “nougat” is a dream, as is Polo Ralph Lauren’s raffia version. For something bolder, check out Hed Mayner’s baseball-cap-bucket-hat hybrid or Prada’s wild gardening visors with plastic nuclear-inspired brims (because why not turn existential dread into fashion?). Prada also has sleek nylon and crochet versions that might just change your mind about bucket hats.

Baseball caps can be tricky—especially when they’re plastered with logos. If you’re not repping a team, a simple canvas or leather option (like Coach’s) works. But summer’s the time for fun, so why not go personalized? Years ago, my friends and I got matching beige caps with “MARK RUFFALO” in serif font—an inside joke that turned into our own little team uniform.

Then there’s the wide-brim sun hat—dramatic, chic, and easily styled beyond its sweetheart reputation. Alessandro Michele nailed it at Valentino, pairing one with groovy trousers and a cropped jacket. And let’s not forget the cowboy hat, having a major moment thanks to Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter tour.

But if you want no-nonsense sun protection, outdoor brands are the way to go. Patagonia’s Brimmer and Surf Brimmer hats are solid picks (chin straps are cool—just don’t fasten them too tight). REI’s Boonie Hat has a flared brim, while their Horizon Breeze Brimmer gives off safari vibes—always chic, à la Yves Saint Laurent.

Whether you go country, punk, or practical, there’s a hat out there for you. Happy shading!
