Thomas de Kluyver encourages us to change our perspective on makeup. Instead of seeing it as a mask to hide behind, he believes it can be worn as a fashion accessory. Backstage at the Simone Rocha spring 2026 show, he told Vogue, “With Simone, we love the idea of makeup acting as an extra accessory, so there are often small decorative touches.”
The collection was presented in the lavish St Stephen Walbrook Church, lit by crystal chandeliers, with a dreamy, youthful soundtrack and hints of debutante style. Designer Simone Rocha shared with Vogue’s Mahoro Seward, “I was inspired by the gesture of giving and receiving a bouquet of flowers—that sense of exchange is reflected in the collection.”
For the show, Thomas de Kluyver used skincare from Dr. Barbara Sturm and makeup from Byredo. He started by prepping the models’ skin with three hydrating products: Hyaluronic Serum, Hyaluronic Face Mist, and Everything Eye Patches, to achieve a smooth, satin finish. “We wanted a fresh, clean look,” he said. “It’s how you’d prepare if you were going to a ball.”
De Kluyver created three bold lip looks, all finished with Byredo’s Liquid Lipstick Vinyl Fantôme for a high-shine effect. The first featured a bright berry-pink flower design applied using transfers and sealed with gloss. He explained, “It was inspired by flowers wrapped in clear plastic at the florist,” mirroring the transparent raincoats worn over floral outfits on the runway.
The second look used a similar technique, with a transfer that read “sweet dream”—a nod to teenage diary entries that complemented the oversized pillow bags in the accessories. Finally, he used Byredo’s Kajal Pencil Kali Kali to create a glossy black lip with a shimmer reminiscent of Rocha’s crystal-embellished dresses.
“It’s not about heavy makeup, but about having fun and being playful,” De Kluyver noted. This emerging trend for spring 2026 started in New York with pastel eyelids and colorful lashes, and he expects it to continue in Milan and Paris. “Brands were hesitant in past seasons, but designers are feeling braver now,” he observed.
For everyday wear, he advises, “Be playful with makeup,” whether through lipstick, eyeshadow, or liner. “Maybe match a color to your outfit. Makeup can be a fashion accessory.”
