Forget “new year, new me”—I’ve always believed fall is the perfect time for reinvention. With its back-to-school energy and changing weather, autumn naturally feels like the right moment for a style refresh. And the easiest way to feel brand-new by September? A haircut, of course.

Enter the “Winona.” No, it’s not a nod to Winona Ryder’s short, choppy pixie from the early ’90s—instead, it’s inspired by her slightly grown-out “bixie” (a bob-pixie hybrid) from her 1994 Reality Bites era. Think tousled, swept-to-the-side, and effortlessly cool. This cut is both versatile and low-maintenance—you can wear it messy, slicked back with gel, or soft and simple.

That same versatility recently caught the attention of 13 Reasons Why actor Katherine Langford, who debuted her own take on the look—a wavier, more polished version of the Winona.

“There’s a certain length that hits a sweet spot,” says her hairstylist, Halley Brisker. “It gives you multiple haircuts in one—you can style it like a pixie, a crop, or even a super-short bob. It’s basically three styles in a single cut.”

Celebrity hairstylist Charley McEwen, who has worked with everyone from Alexander Skarsgård to Lily Allen, has noticed a surge in requests for this bixie style—no surprise, given the current nostalgia wave in fashion and beauty. “It has that late ’90s elegance,” he explains. “It’s a look that always comes back around but never feels too trend-driven.”

Even legendary hairstylist Sam McKnight, known for his work with Princess Diana and Kate Moss, recently shared his version of the Winona. He describes it as “fresh and effortless,” adding, “For the right hair type and texture, it’s easy to manage and still looks great as it grows out.”

As for styling? “It’s all about lived-in texture,” says McKnight. In Reality Bites, Winona’s hair had that slightly unwashed, grungy vibe—but don’t worry, you can recreate it with the right products. “It adds texture and definition,” he notes. “For finer hair, a texture spray like my Cool Girl Superlift Volumizing Spray gives volume without weighing hair down.”
