With global hits like Water and Push 2 Start, it might be surprising that Tyla is new to Coachella—but last night, the South African singer made her debut at the annual music festival in Indio, California.
“When I was younger, I used to binge-watch performances,” Tyla tells Vogue. “It’s definitely a milestone I’ve always wanted to hit. The number of people who came to my set was so exciting and heartwarming.”
She made sure her first Coachella show was unforgettable—bringing out Becky G as a surprise guest, covering Aaliyah’s Rock the Boat, and delivering high-energy performances. “I wanted it to be fun, full of dance and energy,” Tyla says. “And culture—I had my South African dancers with me. It felt like having family back, like old times.”
Her stage fashion was just as striking. Going for a Y2K-inspired look, she worked with Dolce & Gabbana and stylist Ronnie Hart to create a retro yet fresh outfit. She wore a crystal mesh bra under a white crop tee, paired with a tiny red-and-white brocade mini skirt trimmed with black fringe—all revived from the brand’s Spring 2000 collection. “As soon as I saw the skirt, I fell in love,” Tyla says. “It’s barely there—just how I like it.”
To give the throwback look a modern edge, she added ripped fishnets, belly chains, hoop earrings, and leopard-print boots by Burju. (Her jewelry was all Pandora—she’s one of their faces.) “Ripping the stockings was last-minute and probably looked crazy, but I just went for it,” she says. At Coachella, more is always more—and her revival of archival fashion was perfectly on point.
