Tonight, Teyana Taylor’s 2018 song “Rose in Harlem” takes on new meaning at the 2025 Met Gala, themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”

“I’ve never been a big dress girl,” Taylor tells Vogue, explaining she leans toward tailored looks for any occasion. “I wear suits even when it’s not a suit-themed event.” So it’s no surprise she feels right at home with this year’s dress code: Tailored for You.

For the gala, Taylor enlisted two-time Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter to craft a historically inspired ensemble. The result? A burgundy zoot-suit-inspired outfit packed with details fashion lovers and historians will appreciate—feathers, lace, and crystals all come together in one striking look. Along the edge of her cape, the words “Rose in Harlem” are embroidered in tonal thread, while a matching durag sits beneath her feathered hat.

“As we began our journey in this country, we were stripped of everything,” Carter reflects. “Often, the only way to express yourself was through what you wore.”

For Taylor, the outfit is both a playful nod and a story she’s been eager to tell. “When The Met is Teyana Taylor’d to you,” she says with a smile, “that’s the moment we’ve been waiting for.”
