Cece Fein-Hughes is known for her symbolic, enamel-covered jewelry designs, creating custom pieces for stars like Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Margot Robbie, and Jacob Elordi. But her most meaningful commission yet is a tiny signet ring for her baby daughter, Posie. “It really is the biggest dream come true,” smiles the designer, who lives in west London. Her love of symbolism, folklore, and fairytales comes from the stories her grandmother told her while she was growing up on the wild moorlands of Dartmoor. “A signet ring traditionally carries a family seal and is passed down through generations, so making one for my daughter feels incredibly symbolic, like everything has come full circle for our family.”
Custom signet rings, lockets, and pendant charms are a big part of Cece Jewellery’s work. Many mothers mark the birth of their children with pieces featuring engraved and enameled zodiac signs or other meaningful symbols. (In Taylor Swift’s case, that meant a portrait of her Ragdoll cat, Benjamin Button.)
When Fein-Hughes designed her daughter’s ring in adorable miniature proportions—the signet face is just 6mm by 8mm, with a 2mm band—she also made a matching one for herself. “Her name means a small bunch of flowers, so I always knew they would be central to the design,” she says. “Posie’s ring has a rosebud that hasn’t bloomed yet, while my signet shows the same rose in full flower. Together, they represent the growth a mother and daughter experience throughout their lives. The rosebud stands for all the possibilities ahead of her. My hope is to guide and protect her, nurture her creativity, and give her the foundation and freedom to grow into whoever she wants to become.”
Fein-Hughes started designing her daughter’s ring while she was pregnant, diving into the Victorian “language of flowers,” where secret feelings could be expressed through blooms. She was especially inspired by the jewelry Queen Victoria and Prince Albert exchanged, which symbolized their growing family. (Before their wedding in 1840, Albert gave Victoria a brooch shaped like a porcelain and gold orange blossom sprig, representing fertility and engagement; six years later, she marked their anniversary with a headdress featuring four enamel oranges, one for each of their children.) “I’ve always been drawn to jewelry that reveals its story slowly—something beautiful at first glance, but deeply personal once you understand its meaning,” Fein-Hughes adds. “Victorian pieces were also made to last forever. In a world where so many things are meant to be replaced, I find something incredibly meaningful about creating an object that can survive generations and keep telling a family’s story long after we’re gone.”
As for what Fein-Hughes pairs with Posie’s first piece of jewelry? “Dressing a baby girl is honestly one of the greatest joys,” she says with a smile. “I’m completely in love with Pepa London, Tartine et Chocolat, and Bonpoint. They make the most beautiful, traditional little pieces with such romantic, old-world charm—the perfect match for her tiny signet ring.” She plans to create more rings for her daughter as she grows, “with each one representing a different chapter of her life.” But this first piece will stay just as it is. “I don’t plan to resize this one,” she concludes. “I want to frame and preserve it exactly as it is—a tiny portrait of who she was at the very start of her story.”
