September is almost here, which means the fall film festival season is about to kick off. Deputy editor Taylor Antrim stepped in as a guest host on today’s episode of The Run-Through, joined by fellow Vogue editors and movie enthusiasts Liam Hess and Lisa Wong Macabasco. Together, they shared their most anticipated premieres at the Venice Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, and the New York Film Festival.
“Sometimes we get the chance to see some of these films before they debut at the festivals, because the filmmakers are trying to build buzz with Vogue and other outlets,” Taylor explained. So, the trio started by talking about a few movies they’ve already watched. First up was James Gray’s Paper Tiger, starring Adam Driver, Miles Teller, and Scarlett Johansson. “There are a lot of wigs, suits, and accents that feel a bit over-the-top,” Lisa noted about the thriller, which is set in Queens during the 1980s. After seeing it himself, Taylor found himself asking his group chats: “Is Adam Driver a great actor or not?” The group then debated that question.
Next, they turned to All of a Sudden, the first French-language film from Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi; Fjord, a legal thriller by Cristian Mungiu featuring podcast favorite Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan; Hope, an action movie starring Squid Game breakout Hoyeon; and Gentle Monster, which showcases an excellent performance from Léa Seydoux. In a quick final round, each host shared the two films they’re most excited to catch at the festivals. Liam picked Possible Love by Lee Chang-dong and Primetime, a film about To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen. Lisa chose Bucking Fastard from Werner Herzog, starring the Mara sisters, and Misty Green by Chris Rock. Taylor wrapped it up with Ink, a Danny Boyle biopic about Rupert Murdoch’s purchase of The Sun, and Magazine, an indie film from former Vogue contributor Alexandra Pechman.
