I vividly remember sobbing my heart out the summer after seventh grade because my parents—who I thought were so cruel at the time—were forcing me to leave for sleepaway camp before I could finish my 15th rewatch of 10 Things I Hate About You. In hindsight, this was a very clear sign that I was gay—which feels relevant, because I’d argue that 10 Things was the queerest rom-com of the late ’90s (and also, objectively, the best). Sure, Julia Stiles’ love interest was a man, but that man was the late, great gay icon Heath Ledger. Plus, her character spent the movie reading The Bell Jar, listening to The Raincoats, and working on her Sarah Lawrence application. Textbook lesbian behavior.

So, naturally, I lost my mind when I heard that 10 Things I Hate About You is being adapted into a Broadway musical by the unexpected but perfect duo of Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepsen. Normally, I hate unnecessary Hollywood reboots, but this feels different. For one, it’s a musical—which means fresh material. If there isn’t at least one riot grrrl-inspired number, I’ll riot myself. (Though Dunham once called herself a “potbellied riot grrrl,” so I trust Kathleen Hanna’s legacy is in good hands.)

It’s a bleak time in America, and while a Broadway rom-com won’t fix anything, I’m letting myself get excited about Dunham and Jepsen reviving the electric chemistry that made 10 Things so captivating. Remember Heath Ledger tucking Julia Stiles’ hair behind her ear, just staring at her like she was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen? As Cameron (the film’s Shakespeare-quoting, lovesick nerd) would say: I burn, I pine, I perish!

The 2009 TV reboot was forgettable, but Dunham—who gave us Marnie and Charlie’s subway moment, Adam sprinting to Hannah’s rescue, and Ray kissing Aidy Bryant on a Ferris wheel—knows how to deliver the kind of offbeat, magnetic romance that drew so many of us closeted weirdos to the original. And now, with songs? Yes, please.
