When hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos and I FaceTime, he’s in Paris between appointments. “I’m about to do Ms. Demi Moore’s hair,” he says with a huge smile. It’s a surreal moment for the Greek stylist, who moved to the U.S. in 2012 at 29.
I’ve affectionately dubbed him “The Glam God,” and his journey reads like a coming-of-age tale. “I was at the top of my career in Greece, wondering what was next,” he says. “When I decided to leave, people asked, ‘Are you crazy? You’re just going to move to America?’ But I had to try. The only problem? I didn’t speak a word of English when I landed in New York.”
His big break came during a trip back to Greece when he met TV personality Maria Menounos. After moving to the West Coast, everything clicked. “In L.A., I felt insecure about my English,” he admits. “But a client told me, ‘Dimitris, that’s your charm. We have plenty of American stylists who speak perfect English.’ And I realized she was right.”
His accent is just one of his many charms—along with his bright blue eyes and his knack for making everyone, from supermodels to everyday clients, feel at ease. These days, he travels with the Clooneys (he styles Amal and even prepped George for a GQ cover), crafts playful looks for stars like Gigi Hadid and Joey King, and keeps checking off career dreams.
“I’ve admired Amal my whole life,” he says. “She’s so warm and welcoming. Charlotte Tilbury introduced us, and I’ve been doing her hair and makeup ever since. Both she and George are incredible at what they do, not to mention their work with the Clooney Foundation. I’ve learned so much from them.”
Recently, he styled Demi Moore for the Oscars and joined Gigi Hadid’s team, creating her signature flipped bob. It’s a glamorous life, but his mother keeps him grounded. “I called her and said, ‘Mom, I’m at the Oscars!’ She replied, ‘What are the Oscars?’”
Through it all, he sticks to a beauty philosophy he learned in Greece: “My rule is to never follow rules,” he says. “I just want women to feel beautiful. When they look in the mirror and smile after we’ve worked together—that’s what keeps me going.”
