Finding the best desk chair means balancing competing priorities: budget, back support, and design. Unfortunately, my posture has always taken a back seat to my love for good looks. Just come over to my apartment and see what I’ve been sitting on for the past five years—a solid wood stacking chair with a backrest shaped like a half-circle. It’s beautiful, but it’s definitely not a supportive office chair. Because of that, I rarely sit at my desk for long.

Recently, after yet another time working on the couch like a slacker instead of at a desk like a responsible adult, I decided enough was enough—it was time to get a real office chair.

The Best Desk Chairs, According to Vogue

Best Overall Desk Chair: Zara office chair – $629
Best Stationary Desk Chair: Knoll Cesca upholstered chair – $1,164
Best Ergonomic Desk Chair: Branch Verve chair – $599
Best Colorful Desk Chair: Knoll Morrison Hannah occasional chair – $1,847
Best Leather Desk Chair: Rejuvenation Bryn leather office chair – $1,359

But here’s the thing: office chairs are ugly. I don’t mean to knock the ergonomic chair crowd, but the thought of rolling around my office in one of those bulky monstrosities makes me cringe. As I searched the internet for something different, constantly running into clunky metal tubes and endless bouclé upholstery, I remembered just how hard it is to find a desk chair that ticks all the boxes. Was I the only one who felt this way?

“It’s definitely a challenge,” interior designer Helena Clunies-Ross tells me. “Office chairs fall into a very specific category where performance is key, but the design often lags behind. That makes them surprisingly hard to fit into a well-thought-out interior.” She does note that things are improving, but the options are still limited when you want both ergonomics and a stylish look. “That’s why we often go back to timeless, iconic designs like the Eames Aluminium Group Chair.”

I suppose if I had a few thousand dollars to spare for an Eames chair, I wouldn’t be in this situation. But my budget for this purchase was more modest. So I kept searching. In the end, the thing that ruins many desk chairs for me is the base—a clunky five-star base makes the whole chair look unattractive. But Clunies-Ross says there’s a good reason for it. “It provides stability, balance, and supports the movement of a task chair,” she explains, adding that the base doesn’t have to have wheels, which can make the chair feel less bulky.

As for back support, if you’re not going for a full-on, gamer-style ergonomic chair, there are still ways to take care of your lower back. “A good office chair has a padded or ergonomic shape that fits your body, a low back, and should support long periods of sitting,” interior designer Sarah Magness explains. She also highlights chair arms as an important feature: “They let you relax your elbows and lean back into the chair instead of hunching over the keyboard.”

Materials also affect how the chair feels in a living space. “Upholstered or wood-accented chairs tend to blend in more naturally at home,” says interior designer Danielle Chiprut. “Sometimes, we use dining-style or accent chairs with a more thoughtful desk setup, depending on how the space is used day-to-day.”

My own theory is that there’s no one-size-fits-all desk chair. For a chair to fully support your back, you usually have to compromise on looks—and vice versa. But after arming myself with expert advice and spending weeks researching, I finally found a desk chair I’m proud to work in. More on that later. For now, keep reading for my runners-up.

The Final Pick: Zara Home Office Chair
$629 – ZARA

Why We Love It: I only discovered Zara’s home collection a few months ago, quickly picking up a bedside lamp and a full-length mirror for my living room. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. When I started looking for a chair, Zara Home was an early contender. I chose this style for several reasons. First, the quality of the wood and leather upholstery (on both the seat and backrest) is excellent for the price. The four legs are slim and well-proportioned to the rest of the chair. Its silhouette changed my mind about metal bases. Add to that an adjustable height and incredibly easy assembly, and it quickly won me over. After five years of being stuck on the sofa, it feels great to be back at my desk. The chair wraps around you like a cocoon and is shaped to fit a horizontal cushion perfectly—which I’ve been doing now and then with a pillow designed by my friends at Soft Goods Concern. I’ve found my Goldilocks chair, and my workday has improved because of it.

Dimensions: 21.1”W x 21.1”D x 33.5”H
Weight: 23.8 lbs
