As soon as late spring brings warmer weather, I start dreaming up perfect summer outfits—even if vacation is still months away. Fresh off a trip to Australia, where Sydneysiders were flaunting their love of shorts, I landed in New York determined to find the chicest ways to show off some leg. In this edition of Addressed, we’re tackling the timeless question: How do you wear shorts—and look great doing it?

First, let’s talk length. Last year, I crowned the nu-metal short—slightly loose, hitting just below the knee—the summer’s must-have. And judging by the latest collections, designers agree they’re sticking around. That’s good news for me—I wasn’t ready to let them go. But they’re not the only option. Two years after Miuccia Prada made the case for underwear as outerwear, micro shorts (their slightly more modest cousin) are having a moment. These two extremes—long, relaxed, and masculine-leaning vs. ultra-short and literally inspired by lingerie—actually work in harmony. Right now, fashion is all about bold choices—no half-measures.

That said, styling both follows the same rule: Make them part of a cohesive outfit. This season’s runways proved that shorts shine when treated like tailored separates. Picture a polished skirt suit, but swap the skirt for shorts. At Valentino, crochet jackets topped lace-trimmed micro shorts, while Dries Van Noten paired printed silk long shorts with relaxed matching jackets—each look felt complete, not just thrown together.

You don’t need sky-high heels or a full face of makeup to pull this off. At Willy Chavarria, acid-wash cutoff jorts were styled with a button-down, tie, and an oversized denim jacket—effortlessly sharp, never sloppy. The key? Every piece is intentional.

So whether you’re team knee-length or barely-there, the secret is the same: Own it with confidence.
