Catherine Deneuve, Kid Cudi, Katie Holmes. Sacai, Nike, Brain Dead. A.P.C. has collaborated with countless people and brands over the years, but none has excited founder Jean Touitou quite like his new partnership with Gap.
Touitou, French fashion’s most outspoken idealist, is on a Zoom call from Paris with his wife and creative collaborator Judith by his side, and he sounds absolutely delighted. “This is always what I wanted to do,” he says. “A broader audience—this has always been my dream. Of course, I love our audience, and I wouldn’t be here without them, but it’s a real pleasure to finally make this a reality.”
The project came about through the Touitous’ long friendship with Zac Posen, Executive Vice President and Creative Director of Gap Inc., who may have picked up a thing or two about brand partnerships from his Paris friends. Gap has been releasing collaborations (Victoria Beckham, Palace, Doen, and others) since Posen joined the company in 2024. Posen introduced the Touitous to Richard Dickson, Gap’s CEO, over drinks at their Paris home. Everyone got along, and voilà! A 37-piece collection featuring striped tees, rigid denim jackets and miniskirts, and the essential cargo jackets will be available on Gap’s e-commerce site this Friday, as well as at select Gap stores across the U.S. and Canada.
Freshly back from their summer holiday in Pantelleria, Jean and Judith are amazed at how smoothly everything came together. “We gave them really ambitious research on fabrics, finishes, and details, and we spent a lot of time at fittings. Those army jackets—they’re not easy to make,” says Judith. “We were eager to understand how they work, and vice versa. It was a super smooth, super natural process.”
Jean Touitou launched A.P.C. in 1987 as a protest against the gaudy excesses of fashion at the time. His dedication to “perfect pattern cutting and perfect fabric” has kept A.P.C. small compared to a giant like Gap, but their philosophies align; both stand for authenticity and a kind of anti-trend timelessness. “For me, there is a chic way to be casual and a casual way to be chic,” Touitou says. But still: “I find it quite revolutionary that a brand capable of reaching a broad audience is also capable of listening to radical minimalists like us.”
