Shay Mitchell usually isn’t the type to wear jeans on a plane, but she’s recently had a change of heart. The actor and founder of BÉIS has partnered with Gap to launch a 26-piece limited edition collection of clothing and luggage on August 1—and it all began with denim.
“I’ve always loved Gap’s signature blue denim, so we immediately thought: How can we translate that look onto our suitcases?” Mitchell explains. Finding the perfect shade of blue for luggage proved just as tricky as choosing the right jean wash. After some experimenting, they landed on a soft aqua hue that became the foundation for the travel bags. The rest of the collection was inspired by Mitchell’s own travel must-haves.
“I wanted lots of layers because that’s how I pack—always in layers,” she says. Every piece is designed to work both during the journey and at the destination, blending seamlessly with vacation outfits. Take the convertible cargo pants, which keep you warm in chilly cabins but zip off into shorts for warmer climates. (“They’re not like your dad’s hiking pants,” Mitchell notes, pairing them with a hoodie for travel and switching to heels and a tank upon arrival.) There’s also a jumpsuit with a stretchy bandeau top that can be rolled down to wear as trousers, and a versatile black knit dress that doubles as a beach cover-up or a dinner outfit.
Even the plane-friendly jeans got an upgrade—this version is made from a soft cotton-blend knit with a denim-like print, offering comfort without sacrificing style.
Some pieces hide clever features you might not notice at first glance. A hoodie with an oversized hood isn’t just cozy—it doubles as an inflatable neck pillow. “I never use travel pillows—they’re so bulky,” Mitchell admits. The solution? A built-in pillow that inflates in seconds and deflates just as quickly. “No one would ever guess it’s in your hoodie,” she adds.
These smart details come from Mitchell’s experience as a frequent traveler. Even the kids’ line was inspired by her own family trips with her children, Atlas and Rome (who appear in the collection’s lookbook). “They kept drawing on their clothes during trips, and after the hundredth ‘don’t touch that marker,’ I thought, why not give them something they can actually color on?” she says. The result? Playful, doodle-inspired prints that are easy to wash.
The collaboration feels like a full-circle moment for Mitchell, a lifelong Gap fan. “My childhood best friend and I used to get matching overalls from Gap before every school year,” she recalls. “Now, showing her this collection—it’s surreal. We had so much fun creating pieces that are playful yet timeless.”
