Every time Doja Cat steps onto the red carpet, she sets a new standard. Though she’s only attended two Met Galas so far, her fashion and beauty looks have already become unforgettable—from her tribute to Karl Lagerfeld’s cat Choupette to her dramatic mascara tears. No one does it quite like Doja. As we eagerly await her interpretation of this year’s “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” theme, let’s revisit her past Met Gala moments through Vogue’s exclusive coverage.

While Choupette herself didn’t attend the 2023 Met Gala honoring her late owner Karl Lagerfeld, Doja Cat delivered the best feline-inspired look of the night—an instant classic for her Met debut.
Makeup artist Ernesto Casillas told Vogue they aimed for a refined, not costumey, cat-like effect. “We wanted the makeup to feel feline but still soft and pretty,” he said. Using Charlotte Tilbury’s The Feline Flick eyeliner, he created a delicate cat-eye, while matching her lips and faux nose with the Pillow Talk collection for a subtle, charming touch.
The pièce de résistance? A jeweled “third eye” on her forehead. “There’s a million-dollar diamond right in the middle of her forehead,” said Brett Alan Nelson, Doja’s creative director. “It’s the most major art moment of the year. This is her first Met Gala—it had to be bigger than anything before.”
### 2024: Mascara Tears
For the 2024 Met Gala’s Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion theme, Doja Cat took an unconventional approach. Instead of florals or greenery, she embraced water elements, with makeup artist Pat McGrath crafting bold, glittering mascara tears.
She first revealed the look outside the Mark Hotel, wrapped in a towel like she’d just stepped out of the shower—yet dripping in ultra-glam energy.

“We used glitter to paint shimmering, enchanted tears of joy streaming down her cheeks,” McGrath told Vogue. “Her lids featured gilded cat-eyes with black liner, layers of mascara, and warm metallic shades from my Mothership V: Bronze Seduction palette. She looks absolutely major!”

On the red carpet, Doja kept the tear-streaked makeup but swapped the towel for an oversized T-shirt dress with a wet-look finish. Unapologetically bold and unique—just another reason we can’t wait to see what she does next.
