The “How Often Do You Think of the Roman Empire?” meme has come and gone, as memes do, but medieval themes keep resurfacing. Think of Burberry’s gallant knight, Chappell Roan’s cone-shaped hennin hat at the Grammys, or TikTok’s “bardcore” trend. This fascination with the Middle Ages might tie back to the fifth anniversary of the COVID pandemic. In spring 2020, when life felt like a modern-day Black Plague, some turned to Boccaccio’s Decameron—a tale of nobles escaping the plague by telling stories in the countryside.
Today, retreat isn’t an option. During the recent fall fashion season, designers repeatedly spoke of resistance. The runways featured armor-like pieces for bold knights, relaxed tunics and tights, and lavish brocades and velvets fit for noblewomen.
Few designers explicitly cited the Middle Ages as inspiration, but the era’s influence was undeniable. Why does this fantasy appeal now? In a cultural moment that often glorifies toxic figures, there may be a collective yearning for valiant heroes and heroines who believe, “Like it or not, right must prevail.”
