Ah, that endless summer of 1983: in the sun-dappled, lush Lombardy region of Northern Italy, a young Elio Perlman came of age. Timothée Chalamet played the brooding teenage musician in Luca Guadagnino’s 2017 film Call Me By Your Name, a role that launched him into superstardom. It was a beautiful movie filled with longing, heartache, and running fingers through an incredible mop of era-appropriate hair.
Last night, the actor made a surprise appearance at the AMC Burbank for a Dune: Part Three fan event and trailer launch, alongside director Denis Villeneuve and Brittany Broski. He wore a slouchy gray cardigan, a white tee, Adidas sneakers, and baggy blue jeans. His hair has grown noticeably since the Marty Supreme movie campaign and even his recent courtside appearances at New York Knicks games. That youthful, brunet swirl is coming back, just in time for this long, hot summer.

Timothée Chalamet has been on quite a hair journey. In Call Me By Your Name, his cut was long and textured, with curls that were loose and full-bodied in a very ’80s way. Over the years of his still short but ever-starry career, Chalamet has sported a series of different hairstyles, each more chameleonic than the last. Before CMBYN in 2013, he attended the SAG Awards with a spiky, teenage up-do. Then in 2014, he promoted his movie Men, Women & Children with a baby face and a softer, longer quiff. After CMBYN came out, things moved fast: his curls grew out, volume was emphasized, and the lengths started to brush the nape of his neck. It fit the young heartthrob look of the time, much like Harry Styles.

Chalamet went on to experiment with a cropped bowl cut and gelled-up waves for roles in Henry V, Beautiful Boy, and Little Women. While promoting his Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, he played around with Dylan-esque blond bangs and facial hair.
As he’s developed his personal style with stylist Taylor McNeill, he’s also leaned into more intentional cuts: he’s buzzed it, side-parted it, tried a mullet, and grown a mustache. In recent months, it’s been kept short in a kind of Flavortown or early 2000s boyband shape with lots of texture—very much in line with his streetwear-heavy style.
This new look is a return to a fan favorite. But will it stick around? Is it an Elio summer once more? Give it a couple more weeks of growth (and maybe some rosemary oil?) to find out.
