Manhattan’s Upper East Side is famously picturesque, but its charm is never stronger than on a weekday morning in early fall. The streets are free of weekend park crowds, and the sun is at its best. Now there’s another good reason to head Uptown: Sézane’s newest store, a layered, vintage-inspired space that’s part showroom and part boutique, recently opened on Madison Avenue. It’s the brand’s third L’Appartement in New York and the first U.S. retail project from Saint-Germain-des-Prés-based interior design studio Pierre Lacroix. Created together with founder Morgane Sézalory, it was designed to feel more like a Parisian home than a traditional retail space. The interiors don’t disappoint—the fitting room opens with a bubblegum-pink velvet sofa and matching walls, the long display table in the main room is styled with design books and flowers, and vintage furniture is everywhere. When I visited the store on one of those early fall weekday mornings to browse the brand’s fall collection, the first thing I noticed was the checkout counter, probably the most beautiful checkout counter I’ve ever seen: lacquered burgundy, topped with a slab of veined marble in shades of eggplant, accented with chrome. The second thing I noticed was smaller: a tiny dog named Rocky, barreling toward me in search of a treat. (A sadly temporary feature, as he was only in town for the opening.) As for the fall collection, it also feels perfectly suited to its new home in New York. There’s a focus on sharp tailoring and luxurious materials, from fuzzy mohair to rich suede, with a palette that reflects the changing leaves in nearby Central Park. My standout category was outerwear—a key interest for any New Yorker dealing with increasingly unpredictable temperatures—with both transitional pieces and heavier, winter-ready coats on the racks. Here’s everything I tried on from Sézane’s newest line in its newest location. Caped Coats The earliest version of Sézane was actually a vintage resale platform; fast forward 20 years, and references to past decades are still clear in the ready-to-wear. Whether it’s a circa-1950s scarf coat or caped designs from the 1930s, the outerwear in this collection draws on classic silhouettes. It’s been a week since my visit to the store, and I’m still thinking about the Lior: a cape-trench hybrid with a removable belt, dramatic cuffs, and a perfect shade of greige that almost makes you wish for a rainy day just to have an occasion to wear it (almost). The Matthias, a chocolate brown wool coat with a removable scarf, will come in handy as soon as November hits—it can’t be puffer coats 24/7. Sometimes, you need a little glamour. The Orlane, an A-line midi that also comes in black, is lined and made from 100% wool—wear it with knee-high boots to stay warm as temperatures dip. A slim-fit turtleneck will always be my preference to balance out a fuller silhouette, but a button-down would also work for a polished look (and luckily, Sézane has many). The pair in question: mid-rise, perfectly starched, wide-legged. (I sized up for a baggier fit, and it’s worth mentioning that with the lower rise this allowed, the 32-inch inseam was long enough for my 5’10” frame.) It’s an excellent fall trouser—it works with baggy sweaters and slim layers alike, and seems destined for a loafer.
Autumnal Outerwear, Revisited
There’s a brief but beautiful window of weather here in New York—cold enough that you have to layer, but not so freezing that you arrive at your destination half-frozen. This in-between season is where Sézane shines. I found plenty of lightweight jackets to try on in the store, but these two—a classic mac coat and a rich terracotta suede—make a complete outfit on their own.
Colorful Knits
You can’t leave a Sézane shop without browsing its sweater bar—a pharmacy of knitwear in every color and style, showcasing some of the brand’s best-known pieces, from thick wool pullovers to soft cardigans. (At the Upper East Side location, it doubles as an accent wall in the back room, a floor-to-ceiling display of technicolor textiles.) This season, the sleeves got super-sized: The James, an off-the-shoulder rib knit in a delicious cranberry color, and the Jeanne, a mohair piece so lush it convinced me to wear yellow, were two standouts.
Modern Shirting
Embroidered collars, ruffled sleeves, eyelet cuffs, mother-of-pearl buttons… the shirting department here is vast and an endless source of options for anyone unimpressed by a basic button-down. I took a sharp turn out of my comfort zone (I am, in fact, continually impressed by a basic button-down) and tried on something of a sculptural showpiece. The Tazia has puffy sleeves, a starchy, rounded collar, and an oversized front tie that you can fasten into a ribbon or leave undone; for everyday, I’d probably pair it with jeans, but the olive color of these trousers is nice for fall.
