Anyone following skincare trends right now has definitely heard about exosomes—the regenerative ingredient that’s changing how our cells respond to aging. When we first covered their growing presence in serums and creams back in March 2025, it was still a new and emerging category. Now, 17 months later, exosome skincare keeps expanding.
“Exosomes sit at the crossroads of several major shifts in aesthetics: regenerative medicine, cellular signaling, and a deeper understanding of skin as a living organ rather than just a surface to treat,” explains Dr. Lara Devgan, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon and member of the Vogue Beauty Board. She describes them as “microscopic extracellular vesicles” that help cells communicate. Instead of just delivering one ingredient into the skin, exosomes influence how cells talk to each other and respond to aging.
Because of their reparative powers, exosomes play a big role in the ongoing regenerative skincare movement. That said, Dr. Devgan believes it’s too early to consider them a core category like retinoids, antioxidants, or peptides.
As someone who’s had a few life-changing experiences with exosome microneedling (you can read more about my experience here), I’m really excited to see how this ingredient evolves. That said, while the next wave of exosome products is rolling out, we’re most interested in formulas that deliver “clinically meaningful results,” as Dr. Devgan puts it—products that pair exosomes with other proven ingredients and, ideally, feel luxurious to apply.
