Timothée Chalamet came close to Oscar glory with his transformative role as young Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, but could 2026 finally be his year? Judging by the first trailer for Marty Supreme, a fast-paced period drama about a professional ping pong player directed by Josh Safdie (Good Time, Uncut Gems) and co-starring Gwyneth Paltrow, it just might happen.

Written by Safdie and his frequent collaborator Ronald Bronstein, and co-produced by Chalamet and indie powerhouse A24, the film is loosely inspired by real-life table tennis legend Marty Reisman. Born in 1930s Manhattan, Reisman started playing on the Lower East Side, hustling for bets and prizes before becoming the U.S. men’s singles champion. His 1974 memoir, The Money Player: The Confessions of America’s Greatest Table Tennis Player and Hustler, chronicles his wild career.

While plot details are still scarce, insiders confirm the movie will be a fictionalized take on Marty’s rise rather than a straightforward biopic—which is no surprise coming from Safdie. The official synopsis teases: “Marty Mauser, a young man with a dream no one respects, goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness.”

Alongside Chalamet and Paltrow (playing a Hollywood star love interest), the cast includes Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Abel Ferrara, Fran Drescher, and Tyler, the Creator, all decked out in mid-century style. Mark your calendars for a Christmas Day release—and get ready for what’s sure to be a delightfully eccentric press tour.
