When you’re in a hurry and rushing through your skincare and makeup routine, your products often start to pill—forming little balls that get worse the more you blend. Do you remove everything and start over? Who has the time? A better approach is to be proactive: the right sunscreen under makeup could have prevented this frustrating issue in the first place.

Christine Hall, a London-based medical aesthetics practitioner, offers clear advice: “Look for a formula that is lightweight, fast-absorbing, and has slightly lower oil content so your makeup doesn’t slip during the day,” she explains. “Ideally, you also want something with minimal white cast so it doesn’t alter your foundation’s tone.” Choosing the right sunscreen can make or break your entire look—so much so that some wedding photographers even advise brides to skip SPF on their big day to avoid white cast, flashback, or greasy-looking skin from heavy formulas.

Pilling and other issues when layering sunscreen and makeup often come down to texture. “Fluid, lightweight formulas tend to absorb into the skin and layer seamlessly, while thicker textures are more likely to sit on the surface and shift,” says board-certified aesthetic injector Hajrie Sulejmani. “That said, a well-formulated product in any category can perform beautifully if it sets properly.”

Nurse practitioner Tama Tran adds that pilling can result from formula clashes and how products are applied. “Many sunscreens contain silicones and film-forming agents that create a protective barrier on the skin, but these can roll or ball up when disturbed,” she explains. Applying multiple products with incompatible textures—like a rich moisturizer followed by a silicone primer and SPF—can make this worse. “Technique also matters: rubbing products in instead of gently pressing them can break apart the sunscreen layer.”

With this in mind, Dr. Hall recommends a sunscreen that “forms a nice thin, even film so foundation glides on without looking patchy, sliding off, or separating.” Below, shop Vogue’s favorite sunscreens to wear under makeup—they sit seamlessly beneath your base and leave a smooth canvas for your artistry.

Everything You Need to Know

What causes sunscreen to pill when layered with skincare or foundation?
According to Dr. Hall, pilling happens when “you are using formulas that aren’t really compatible with each other.” She adds that other factors include using too much product—since your skin can only absorb so much—and not allowing each layer to absorb fully. “Try and leave a couple of minutes between each layer so that you’re maximizing each ingredient, preventing pilling, and not rubbing your skin too much.”

How do mineral and chemical filters affect how foundation sits on the skin?
There are two main types of filters used in SPF: chemical and mineral. Dr. Hall explains the differences:

Mineral filters (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) sit on the skin’s surface as tiny particles, reflecting light. They can create a mattified or blurred finish but may leave a white cast and can be drying, which might emphasize texture under foundation on dry skin.

Chemical filters are dissolved within the formula, creating a thinner, more transparent film on the skin. They tend to feel light and glowy and can be formulated without leaving a cast.

Many modern sunscreens now use hybrid filters, combining both chemical and mineral ingredients to offer benefits like blue-light protection with the nicer finish of a chemical filter.

Can SPF double as a primer?
Yes, SPF can double as a primer, says Dr. Hall. For those without very dry skin, it can also serve as a moisturizer—provided it’s a dedicated SPF formula designed for that purpose, not just a moisturizer with a low SPF rating. She notes that many advanced SPF formulas contain hydrating humectants, silicones to blur pores and fine lines, film-forming polymers to smooth the skin, and oil-control powders to reduce shine. Some Korean products, like “tone-up” sunscreens, also offer light coverage. The idea is that they brighten the skin for a more radiant finish.

How long should sunscreen set before applying makeup?
According to Tama Tran, allowing time between skincare and makeup layers is one of the best ways to prevent pilling. She says, “After applying sunscreen, it’s important to give it enough time to fully set, form an even film, and lose any initial tackiness before applying makeup.” For lighter formulas, she recommends waiting at least 60 to 90 seconds. Richer textures may need closer to two or three minutes.
If you skip the wait, applying makeup can disrupt the sunscreen layer and cause separation. She adds, “A good sign that the skin is ready is when the sunscreen no longer feels sticky to the touch.”

Does applying foundation reduce SPF protection?
Dr. Hall emphasizes, “A foundation shouldn’t reduce SPF protection, especially since some foundations actually contain SPF.” For the best application, she advises, “Let the SPF set first, then apply makeup by pressing, dabbing, or gently using a brush instead of rubbing.”
She concludes by noting that we shouldn’t rely solely on the SPF in foundation: “The amount you’d need would be much more than you typically use. You’d have to apply a spoonful of foundation, which no one does.”
