As April comes to an end, there’s only one thing on our minds: The Costume Institute’s new exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art—and its legendary celebration, the Met Gala. Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the show will examine how style shapes Black identities, with a focus on the rise of the Black dandy.
“Dandyism might appear frivolous, but it often challenges or transcends social and cultural hierarchies,” said Miller, who co-curated the exhibition, when announcing the dress code. “It raises questions about identity, representation, and mobility in relation to race, class, gender, sexuality, and power. This exhibition presents dandyism as both a statement and a provocation.”
This year’s dress code, tailored for you, encourages guests to express their personal style through tailoring. While it may seem more structured than past themes, there are endless ways to reinvent the classic suit. To prove it, we’ve gathered 61 looks perfect for the Met Gala red carpet—no matter your style.
