Summer may be in full swing, but we’re already thinking ahead to fall. The transition from shorts and breezy dresses to heavier trousers and denim doesn’t have to be abrupt—that’s where the skant comes in.
While wearing pants under skirts and dresses is a classic transitional option, I’ve recently become obsessed with skants—pants with a built-in overskirt. Last summer, I splurged on a sheer brown pair from Paloma Wool (basically the skant experts), complete with a matching mini skirt. On sticky summer days, I wear it with a tank and sandals, but when temperatures drop, it pairs just as well with a cozy cardigan.
Celebrities are catching on, too. Jennifer Lawrence recently stepped out in sheer navy trousers layered with a knee-length skirt, a distressed tee, and Prada kitten heels—the skant perfectly bridged the gap between her casual top and dressy shoes.
Kaia Gerber has also used skants to spice up simple outfits. Last year, she paired a navy crop top and black ballet flats with gray Paloma Wool trousers featuring a mini overskirt (yes, the brand keeps popping up). But Paloma Wool isn’t the only player—Collina Strada, MM6, and ASOS have all put their own spin on the look.
For something different, try a dress-over-pants combo. Kendall Jenner nailed it last fall with a KNWLS mini dress layered over flared trousers. Whether you go for skants or a dress-and-pants duo, these coordinated looks are an effortless way to upgrade your wardrobe between seasons.
