Diane von Furstenberg is full of wisdom. When we talked earlier this year, I walked away with a new life motto I didn’t realize I needed. And then she shared this piece of insight: “Much like the moon, women also have seasons,” she said over video chat. “The spring of life is when everything is just beginning, and you enjoy appreciating every little thing. Then there’s the summer of life, where the rewards of it all start to show. In the autumn of life, there are many beautiful colors and lessons. Then you move into winter, which is where I am now. It’s such a luxury to have lived through the other three seasons, because aging is such a luxury. It’s beautiful, too.”

Even though von Furstenberg is enjoying the aging process, that doesn’t mean she’s stopped taking care of her skin. Yesterday, she shared one of her beauty secrets on Instagram—a full-body UPF suit, along with a hat and face mask—to shield herself from the summer sun.

“Much like SPF is an ingredient in lotions or creams that protects against harmful UV rays, UPF is a weave or type of fabric that does the same thing,” Mona A. Gohara, MD, associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine, previously told Vogue. She adds that it’s a great way to go the extra mile in protecting yourself from sun-related skin cancer, especially if you’re spending the whole day in the water, where sunscreen can easily wash off.

I always keep a UPF long-sleeved shirt or two on hand for beach trips and hikes. And while von Furstenberg chose a more minimalist and sleek look, there are plenty of options for those who prefer something bolder. Anne Hathaway is also a fan of UPF clothing, wearing long-sleeved tops and pants in bright tie-dye colors on vacation for several summers in a row. I’ve been loving a leopard print long-sleeved suit from WatSkin (it even has a hood!) and the UPF dress from Claudent that Kendall Jenner approves of.

Von Furstenberg took her sun protection a step further by adding a face mask. If you’re trying to find one online, you’re out of luck—the designer cut up a shirt, making two holes for her eyes and one for her face. It’s a creative move, and basically, a one-of-a-kind couture piece. Once a fashion designer, always a fashion designer—just more sun-aware now.
